Reformatting logos books...

With the possibility of me purchasing an eBook reader such as the Sony Reader, Kindle or Nook in the future, I asked the customer service dept. of Logos if any of the readers support the Logos format. None of them do, but they said that because I own the books purchased though them I have the right to copy the books I want from Libronix and paste them into another format, such as PDF.

So here is my questions. Is there any benefit one fomat has over another? And is there a quick way to copy an entire book, or do I need to click and scroll down the whole book page by page?

Logos books include searching abilities and interoperability with other resources that eBook readers like the ones you mention don't provide. So advantages for some books will be greater than for other books.

PDF is a fairly limited format, though it does allow searching for words/phrases, etc. PDF doesn't allow linking, or hover over pop-ups for Bible verses though (which Logos does), and I don't believe there is a book-marking feature in Adobe's PDF reader (though I've never even looked for one).

Copying and printing from Logos is limited to a few pages at a time. There is no quick way to do what you're asking. This is meant to discourage illegal use of the resources. If a Logos support person suggested this was legal for personal use, then I suppose it is, though I find it a bit surprising.

Logos4 does offer a reading view, which may satisfy your need to read. This would work from any laptop. Some are finding that Logos4 even works on some netbooks (though some have degraded performance for L4).

I'd guess that with the limited provisions in the Logos 3 or 4 reader for exporting works, you're going to be ending up cutting and pasting first into a word processor and then manipulating the data in the word processor so that it will result in a PDF or whatever you want. You could probably do this for free with OpenOffice as it has facilities to export word processor files to PDF.

And yes, PDF files can have bookmarks and notes and you can do those in OpenOffice as well.

Have fun with this. It's going to be a big project.

If Logos said that it was OK to do this then I wonder why they have limited the export function of their readers. If it is allowable, I'd like to convert some of the works that I have in Logos to PDF files as well. I can see a longer life-time value and more freedom in having the works in a portable format that I can markup myself if I care to. I can do without all of the internal linking if I can quickly search the file for the information that I need.

And then I can use it under Linux too. [:D]

This would be good it you were planning an exodus from Logos as well. I, for example, would sort of like to have SESB 3.0 for Logos, but Logos 3 is one Internet Explorer upgrade away from obsolescence and Logos 4 is missing features that allow SESB 3.0 to fully function - so if I bought it I might not be getting all of this whiz-bang functionality that it was engineered with. So, I'm NOT buying it. But I'd not mind taking my BHS from Logos and turning it into a searchable PDF that I can then take and markup in whatever format I want under Linux to suit my tastes and uses.

BTW, this is precisely WHY I'd like to take my Logos library to Linux in PDF or whatever format. I can then use THE WORKS that I bought without all of the drama and kludges and twitter/myface/spacebook social engineering doo-dads that DO NOT HELP my Bible studies. I want computer formatted BOOKS. Not social networking and a reader that has to sync to a server each and every time I move my mouse.

It'd be very cool if Logos publically said that it was OK to use the books in whatever format for personal use.

Thanks for the advice guys! Here is the email sent to me from Logos Customer Support, just so you guys know that it is okay (according to Logos) to reformat the books.

Dear Kyle,

Our books are not formatted for use within any of the book readers on the market today. We do not currently have plans to put them into those formats ourselves, but if you would like to do that yourself, that would be fine. You own the books and are more than welcome to copy the books you want from Libronix and paste them in to a format usable on the reader of your choosing.
