Logos 5 eating up Memory on Mac

Hello, I purchased Logos 5 this weekend, and have barely gotten any time to check it out and begin to learn it. The reason is, that the moment I turn it on it begins to eat so much of my computer's memory (ram), that it's unusable. I have a memory monitor, and when I start up Logos, I have 1.7 gigs of ram left. But, as I use it, it slowly begins to go down, and right now, as I write this, my computer only has 74.5 mb free of ram, even though I've already quit out of Logos.

Help! I want to use the new software, but as it is now, it's completely unusable. What's going on?

Hi Adam - Welcome to the forums! Sorry you are having troubles. [:S]

The first thing you should know, is that Logos must index after resources are added. Since you just purchased Logos, I assume this may be part of the issue. Depending upon the size of your library, and the specs on your computer, this process can take 8 hours or longer… much longer if your specs are low.

Can you tell me more about your new library and computer specs?

Hi Adam: First we need to know if you re on a mac or a pc/

Next: Have you let Logos finish indexing? Indexing takes a fairly large amount of time and really hits the processors and ram hard.

Next: If you have 2 gigs of ram, it's going to use most of it. Closing out of things you are not using in Logos does help a lot.

Next: Logos will "hold" ram for a bit after closing sometimes, don't know why.

My guess with what you have described is an indexing issue or a corrupted file.

Make sure indexing is done, if so, suggest calling Logos Monday.

When Logos is indexing, the Indexer can use a lot of RAM, especially when indexing an entire library. Personally tend to close other applications, let Logos index entire library, then use applications normally. Along with using RAM, indexing is storage intensive. Changing Energy Saver so computer never sleeps allows indexing to be done while body sleeps. Using a fan or cooling device while indexing can be prudent.

Thanks guys. I've set my computer to Index Logos, and not to do anything else. We'll see if this fixes the issue.

As far as computer spec and other info, I have the Logos Silver, and my computer is a late 2011 MacBook Pro, which has 4 gigs of ram.

Adam - I bought the Bronze, and have the 2010 mbp with 4gig, I ended up buying 8gigs of ram ($50)

It was annoying to do, but it is running much faster.

4gb of RAM isn't bad. But if you can spare the few extra dollars to upgrade, it's worth it. Extra RAM is one of the best computer upgrades a person can do. It's very cheap and you get a lot of benefit. Though that amount will depend on how much you like to multitask or use intense programs like Logos... even with 16gb of RAM Logos's indexing can bring me down to ~6gb. (Granted, that might be with a couple things in the background.)
