My Installation Nightmare

As far as I can tell, Logos 4 is unusable. How is anyone getting anything done with this program?

If it never installed I can see where you can come to this conclusion. It's hard to get anything done with a program that is not installed correctly. However I am actually getting far more done with L4 then I did with L3. If I can ever break this addiction I have for the forum I might get even more done.

Logos, could you please ban me for a week or two?

Problem 1: It makes it's own copy of ALL my resources. This is not my idea of coexisting with Logos 3. I ran out of disk space and couldn't even uninstall successfully.

Did you ever try and save a MS Word 2009 document back to Word 1.0? What happens, you lose formatting and some features are not compatible. In much the same way, L4 can read all your old L3 resources, but it needs to "upgrade" them for better performance.

I wil let others speak on your other points.

Problem 2: It installs in a non-standard place. When I went to manually delete files so I could at least uninstall, I found that it installs in "C:\Users\Admin\AppData\Local\Logos4" instead of in "C:\Program Files" like programs should.

Problem 5: When ran as a non-administroator user, it tries to make yet another copy of all my resources. When I drilled down to "E:\Logos4" to run it, it's now making yet another copy of every resource in "C:\Users\Jeff\AppData\Local\Logos4".

Logos must be installed as the user that is going to use the software...i.e., not Admin/Adminstrator (unless Admin is the user). It is not designed to be shared among the different users.

Logos 4 Beta 2 is designed as a per-user application. (The only reason the installer will ever need admin rights, if you're wondering why it prompted for elevation, is to install the .NET Framework, or system-wide fonts.) It does not publish itself to other users' accounts on the same machine once it is installed.

To use it by two separate users on the same computer, you will need to install it under both accounts. And note that it will sync settings, documents, history, etc. between those two accounts (assuming that you log in with the same logos.com account on both Windows accounts).

This is a "can't win" problem. People use account profiles for dramatically different reasons. In business environment (for which they were really intended) each different login may represent completely different users, with different application, setting, and data needs. (And a desire for privacy within one user account.)

Some apps add code (and a lot of complexity) to allow you to choose a per-user or "for all users" installation. Then they keep the user data separate from program data. They also require privileges elevation for installation, updates, etc. This works great when the installation really would be identical for each users, and all that differs are some settings and your documents.

We wanted to avoid access control requests during installation (and, more importantly, during the frequent background updates). Our app is also unusual in that it consists of code, user-files, and resources -- which are in the middle. They're like code in that they're static, large, and could be shared by multiple users. But they're like user data in that each licensed user has a slightly different collection, and we need to index each collection uniquely, etc.

Since Logos 4 requires a login with a unique user identity, and a unique user identity happens to be what a Windows user account is, we decided it would be much easier to install in the user profile. This also supports a church (or home) computer shared by two people who WANT separate Logos accounts, profiles, settings (and resource collections). And makes installation and updating easier.

You are not alone in your frustration. Thanks for pointing them out again. Logos has come a long way in addressing these issues, but if new installers are still running into some of these problems, it seems clear that they can do more to make clear what happens in this new install.

Problem 1 should be made so clear to the new customer that this question would not come up again. I believe the technology exists to make sure a warning is issued in the actual program install that would warn the customer that this is going to happen. Simple adjustment to solve the problem. Thus, when a new customer begins installation and sees the warning, they can then determine whether it is wise to continue or not.

Problem 2 can be solved by informing the customer during installation that he program will be installed in a particular place. In this way, the customer can proceed with knowledge. If the customer is not happy with this place where the program will be installed, they then can abort the installation.

Problem 3 I will assume will be addressed in the future as Logos staff works on making the program more efficient

Problem 4 and 5 I have no comment a bout. I will let other address it

Finally, Logos 4 is usable. It is a great program. But at the moment there are bugs in the program. The switch from L3 to L4 has been very rocky for many, sometimes due to the huge changes in L4, but mostly from what I can tell, due to issues of installation. I have seen a lot of defending on the forum on the installation issue. But when the dust settles, I think it is going to be clear that this is where Logos has made mistakes. Your post should be very helpful for the staff to continue to work out the kinks to get L4 installation to be smoother and less painful.

As far as I can tell, Logos hasn't subverted anything that a malicious program couldn't already do. The user directory is available for updating by the user without any interference from the OS. Permission elevation is just required for system type directories.

You can have two accounts, BUT it will require two installations (and twice the disk space).

I'll try and answer your points:

It's poor that Logos4 doesn't estimate hard disk space before attempting to install. It does require a lot of disk-space, as yes, it does make a copy of all your resources (and it will need even more as you index them). Many files are in a new format, so you will need two copies (an L3 and an L4 version). However, some files only exist in an L3 version, which can still be read by L4. Once you're installed, you can add your L4 folder to L3, then delete the duplicate resources from your L3 folder.
It installs in a less standard (not non-standard) place than most applications. As someone pointed out, Google Chrome installs there, too. This page might help you understand some of the reasons why. Installing in appdata does reduce problems with needing to install as admin. It also prevents people breaking the licence agreement by allowing the program to be run by multiple users.
If the install didn't complete, I wouldn't expect it to uninstall properly.
Logos4 is only licenced for one user. You should install it for the user who will use the software. You don't need to log-in as admin.
You can't install in e:\Logos4 - if you attempt to install in a non-standard way, it will break. Naturally.

I'm afraid there's no solution other than freeing up some disk space and installing it in the way it has been designed.

just tried it out on my Firefox browser (win 7). It works, but there is a disclaimer that it was designed for mobile browsing and my not function as desired on an actual computer.

My understanding is that this will probably come sometime in the future. Logos is clearly heading into the clouds. I actually think they dont have a choice. L4 takes up 20 GB on my computer. That is really too much space...unless they allow the data to be stored on an external harddrive...which I hold out hope will also be available in the future.

I'm not questioning that this may be how it appeared, but one of the positives of Logos4 installing into appdata is that it makes it very hard to wreck your machine. That's why Windows lets it install there without annoying prompts. It can't do any harm. It's possible that the .NET Framework (a Microsoft program required by Logos4 and installed at the same time) caused some problems, but it would only do so if there were underlying issues there already. If you fit a new engine into a rundown car, you might find it breaks the suspension.

3. Why not? It should remove every file and every registry entry it tried to make. It shouldn't matter that some of them aren't there.

4. A real word user and a computer account are not one-for-one corresondence. As I explained, I have a user for remote logins with toolbars customized for using Logos 3 on my cell phone using remote desktop client. It appears that will no longer be possible unless I can figure out how to hack the registry to allow it.

5. It does offer to let you specify where you want to install it, and that does seem to work, but this needing to have everything under one directory isn't desirable. I might not want my huge resources installed in the same partition as I install my programs or have my data files for space and backup management purposes.

And I haven't even gotten to the new user interface and all its missing features yet. I can't imagine what Logos was thinking when they designed this. At no time did I desire a whole new product and new way of doing things. All I wanted out of Logos 3 was fast searching. By the time they get around to adding all the missing features back in, assuming they ever do (my experience with other products is that missing features in new versions are always gone for good), Logos 4 will be just as complicated as Logos 3.

Yes, I understand this. But that is the whole point of these threads. Many are not expecting to upgrade computers in order to run an expensive program they have purchased. L4 was designed not for geeks, but for the regular, average user. Thus, whether the machine we have is old or not should not matter. If it does matter, then Logos just needs to inform the customer at the time of installation exactly what is needed to run L4.

Incidentally, I installed L4 on my xp machine. I keep it clean and up to date. Installation broke my machine. That is the simplicity of it. These threads are designed to help point out what is going on with some customers so Logos can come up with ways to avoid the problems in the future.

Sorry that you are having such problems with your installation. I know how frustrating software or even hardware problems can be, and sometimes they seem to be unsolvable. And I am sure you were excited about seeing it run, which makes it even more frustrating.

(I know everyone complained about vista, I never had ANY problem with vista, but installed 7 on the home computer last week, nothing but hassle, printer driver issues, reinstalling other programs issues - believe me I understand your frustrations)

Just to give you another perspective, for me L4 is maybe 5 times as useful and helpful and as L3. There is some great imagination and vision in this program. It has a learning curve, kind of a steep one if you are like me and just try and learn it yourself, but if you watch the videos, the ones on logos.com and the ones posted in the forum, it really shortens the learning curve. I've installed on 3 computers, my work, my home, my laptop, and all went smoothly. The first few runs of L4 seem to be more rocky then later ones, when all the indexing is done - it's kind of funny, it seems to settle into the system and run better and faster. So far missing features have not been an issue, L4 does so much more for me than L3, I still have not taken in all of it's features - and "missing features" might really mean you have to do it another way.

I have tried to install in my normal login but for some reason (maybe nothing to do with logos, I don't know) it would not install so I switched to my admin login. I don't mind that it is designed this way I just wish I had been clearly told in the install process that you have chosen a non standard install method so that I would not now have the nightmare of having loaded it in noral fashion via an admin login and then on switching back to my normal login having nothing.

I find some of your logic a bit strange. Your reference to business computer setups is only one explanation. Some have identical programs in every login only different settings. I have used this so that I can have different setups in different logins but I am the only person using the machine. You presume too much or is it not enough.

I am thas sole user of this computer but it is set up as per a business model of computing and I have three logins for different purposes. There is only one user. And even if there were two what is the problem.

I would prefer to live with the issues than have what I have now had to go through and I 'm not done yet. This really is a nightmare and an unnecessary one had sufficient warnings or rather instructions had been given in the first place. After all you are the ones doing what seems to be a non standard install (I'm not complaining becuase it is non standard just that I was not told. Clear explanation would have made is simple.

Then problem is made worse by the fact that I now need to do an install on my normal login and so far as I can tell I will need to download all my resources again. This is a 6GB plus download. In Australia this is a problem as braodband costs here are relatively high and subject to download limits. after which they become prohibitively expensive. I have already used so much already that to download them all again will take me over my limit. I can't afford to do that and so will be force to wait till the start of January. If there is some way of installing on my normal login without having to download the resources again I would really love to know.

That all said I really love the new interface and tools. I have played with it in my admin setup and am very please that I upgraded not just to Logos 4 but also to a higher package. Thanks for all that you have done to make Bible study so much more efficient and powerfull. keep up the good work and please fix your install warnings and education of users so that no one else goes through this frustration. Better yet give the option of a standard install for those of us who would appreciate it that way. It may not be as big a problem as you think for users. Certainly not for me. DOes anyone else agree?

Sorry for the non standard response. I rarely use forums and missed seing the reply button.

In reading a bit more I might have an answer that will get me going if the tecnique for saving on downloads for a new machine work for a different login.

Oh well here goes. Thanks for the opportunity to air my frustration and hope that in some way it helps you to make it easier for others in the future.

Maybe I missed it on this long string of threads, but if the installation was set up so that the unique logins and functions for a user are kept, why not keep that in a config unique to that user, not unique to the installation? Also, if I am installing 8+GB of information for a user, why could not the library portion at least be considered common to the machine?

What I had to do on a system with a small hard drive was just uninstall 3 and delete all of the v3 resources. Then a fresh install and download of only the resource files you have a license for. This was the only way that I could free up the necessary space

Following what I thought was advice from Microsoft for setting up Windows 7 I set up two user accounts, both for me. One is for Admin, the other for my day-to-day work. It was my understanding that this, somehow, is more secure from Microsoft's perspective, than always being logged on as an Administrator.

I wish I had read this thread before staying up to 4 am this morning downloading, installing, indexing. I too felt that Logos 4 forced me to use my Admin user account. I am very disappointed that Logos 4 is not now available to my normal user account. I would like to politely join the others who are asking for this information to be made more easily available before installation. There are >3000 threads in the Logos 4 part of the Blog--surely it is impossible to read all of them before installation.

My first impression is that I will like Logos 4; I certainly liked the speed of my initial searches!

I live in the Philippines, which has its own internet connection issues. I am quite disappointed to have to do it all over again, including, apparently the huge download.

Spent an hour and 15 minutes using "Method 1" from the wiki above. It worked without downloading or indexing again! (Well, there was a mistake in the Wiki and two things I misunderstood... does anyone want to know about these?) But, in short, it worked! Do you detect a little joy here? After uninstalling Logos 4 from my Admin account I ended up with as much empty HD space as I started with.

Now its time to actually learn how to use it! Yes!

I tried to install Logos 4 using my normal user account in Vista. After 30+ minutes one screen (Did it contain the word prerequisites? I don't remember.) showed no progress so I canceled the installation. I tried installing one more time but experienced the same results. I then logged out of my account, logged in using the Admin account, and successfully installed Logos 4.

I wish I knew then what I know now -- don't use the Admin account to install Logos 4.

Thanks be to God (and Damian) for the link to Dave's post on how to reinstall without the download! (I used Method 3.) Logos 4 is now working for my personal account. I have also uninstalled the admin's copy to save disk space.

Dear Logos, Since Logos 4 isn't installed in the same manner that most other Windows programs, perhaps it would be a good idea to clearly notify users early during the installation so that they don't make the same mistake as me.
