Base Package vs. Minimal Crossgrades

I need some help understanding something.

I purchased Logos 5 Bronze and am perfectly happy with it with the exception that it includes a ton of resources I will never use. I was pondering "downgrading" to the Logos 4 Minimal Crossgrade + Logos 5 Minimal Crossgrade instead of the base package, but was strongly discouraged from doing so by the sales rep I've been working with because, in his words, I'd be losing "foundational features" like "sentence diagramming, exegetical guide study, passage analysis, example uses feature, literary typing, parsing and so on." Given that the Logos 5 Minimal Crossgrade web page says that it includes "all the new Logos 5 features and datasets, plus a small collection of resources that equip you to use them," needless to say, I was surprised to hear about these seemingly "hidden" features that I would be losing.

$114.95 (Logos 4 Minimal Crossgrade) + $159.95 (Logos 5 Minimal Crossgrade) = $274.90. I paid over $250 more for the Bronze base package and the resources I'd need/want add to the two Crossgrades (NRSV Bible, etc.) add up to significantly less than $250.

I'm not opposed to spending money on something if it's worth it, but I feel like I'm being led to stick with the base package just because it's more expensive. Am I missing something? Are there really "foundational features" I'd be losing by making the switch? Any help you all can provide would be much appreciated.

I have to be honest – as a former Accordance user, I'm happy that I switched because there are resources available for Logos that simply aren't available for Accordance. But the confusion and complexity and seeming "mysteriousness" around what's included and what's not in certain packages and products is very disheartening to me. I'm sticking with it, but I have to admit to a level of frustration that I didn't have before.

Hi Adam,

I can't answer your question directly but it looks to me as if you are thinking of using some tools for the wrong purpose.

You can get (will be able to get) the logos engine for free to this you can add crossgrade facilities - but mostly you just end up with engine.

The Crossgrade options are not really designed for use with new purchases of Logos 5 but are to facilitate existing users of Logos 4 to move up.

When a Logos 4 user moves up they bring with them a legacy of resources and facilities that they already own.

I think, that what you are trying to do would leave you with all the engine – but none of the fuel. Resources are the fuel of Logos. We may think that we may never use a resource, and it is true we may never go to that resource directly, but one of the strengths of Logos is that it can uncover relevant bits from what we might consider unnecessary resources.

In my opinion the Bronze package provides a good foundation for running the engine and you would be well advised to stick with it and build from there.

I have to agree that it isn't made easy and there is a certain amount of disinformation about what features are included at what level. The best I could say about the advice given is that you would be losing "sentence diagramming, exegetical guide study, passage analysis, example uses feature, literary typing, parsing and so on." IF you got only the Logos 5 Min Crossgrade. But the Logos 4 Min Crossgrade supplies all those features. Therefore the combination of the two Crossgrades is a sound choice provided you also get at least one English bible from those named in the Logos 4 Min Crossgrade page under the heading Interlinear Bibles e.g. NRSV, ESV, NASB95 (these have both Greek and Hebrew interlinears) +original language lexicons.

In the sense that you don't have to make these choices Bronze is a good foundation, so have a look at the lexicons it has. The advantage of the two Crossgrades is that you would be getting ALL the features & datasets of Logos 5 (the ones listed under the heading Datasets in the Comparison page).

Mike: I already have a number of resources – the ones I really need – that I purchased separately because they weren't included in Bronze anyway (the CEB Bible, SESB, BDAG, etc.). That's why I'm considering the Minimal Crossgrades; the resources included in Bronze (with the exception of a few English Bibles, LEH, and BDB – which, purchased separately, still end up costing less than what I paid for Bronze) simply aren't very useful to me.

Well, dance a jig! You already have SESB, BDAG, etc. Two crossgrades and you're done. (I normally never disagree with Mike since he's always right and I would therefore always look foolish. But I'll take a big chance here.)

I don't disagree with Dave, In fact, to my chagrin, I have paid little attention to the crossgrade options.

So it is a a case of 'y're pays y're money and y're takes y're chance'.

Is the less cost significantly less cost?

In the short run, it's a savings of $250. In the long run (since I'll need to eventually add LEH, and BDB once I learn Hebrew) it'll still be a savings of over $100. Is that "significantly less cost"? Maybe not, but $100 is significant enough for me!
