BUG: link not highlighted

I had to manually create this link.
1. Note created by highlight
2. Copy and paste text into note
3. Add Genesis at the front of the reference to create link.
4. Add space before paren to create link. Highlighted link created.
5. Backspace to remove extra space. Link and highlight disappear.
6. Copy and paste link into linkage via tool bar.
7. Link made as shown by mouse over (or link tool) but is not highlighted
EDIT: interestingly if I copy and paste Genesis rather than type it, the link is made without the need of the final space.

Yes, that is the way it works for me, too. It acts like adding a space after the reference to create the link makes the link part of the space, so when you erase the space, you also erase the link.
As a workaround, try this:
- Type the reference.
- Add the close-parenthesis.
- Then type space
- The link is created, and there is no extra space between the reference and the close-paren.
