Englishman's Concordance

Hi all, I am looking at Galatians 2:11 in the ESV and the word "condemned" is used. That is a strong word and I wanted to know if Paul was meaning condemned in the sense of hell or was he saying something else? I don't want to study every instance of the English word "condemned" I want to study the Greek word, not the English word "condemned". I think this used to be done in something called an Englishman's Concordance. So how do I look up all instances of the Greek word that was translated as "condemned" and NOT the English word "condemned"?

I am not an expert on original languages by any means… here is what I would do. Hopefully if it needs to be tweaked, someone will give us a gentle pointer. [:)]

Right click on the word in a bible with a reverse interlinear (such as the ESV)
On the right side of the pop up menu, select "lemma." Then select "Bible Word Study" on the left side of the pop up menu.
The Bible Word Study will show you the original language word, and how it was translated into english.

WOW, that easy, so now I can see that the Greek word kataginosko is only used 3 times in the NT. But the English word "condemned" is used about 70 times. Makes sense. Thanks

Same with me. I did the same:

Right click on the word in a bible with a reverse interlinear (such as the ESV)
On the right side of the pop up menu, select "lemma." Then select "Bible Word Study" on the left side of the pop up menu.

The Bible Word Study will show you the original language word, and how it was translated into english.

You'll see that actually this is a rare word, Paul uses it only once (here in Gal, all the other times when he uses such language in Galatians, he takes other Greek words) and John uses it twice (in the same sentence, in 1 John 3,20f)

Which brings up another issue: when a word is used so infrequently in the NT it may be appropriate to look at other contemporary resources to get a more comprehensive view of its useage.

As pointed out in WBC:

ὅτι κατεγνωσμένος ἦν

, "because he stood condemned." Paul’s judgment on Cephas’s conduct is exceedingly severe: "he stood condemned" (so rsv). The verb καταγινώσκω means, as Ulrich Wilckens points out, "be condemned before God" (see TDNT 8:568 n. 51), and not just "be blamed" (kjv), "in the wrong" (jb, neb, niv), or even "self-condemned by the inconsistency of his own actions" (as Lightfoot, Galatians, 111; Burton, Galatians, 103; Bruce, Galatians, 129; et al.). Josephus regularly used καταγινώσκω to mean "condemned to death" before God or a tribunal (cf. esp. J. W. 1.635: "I stand condemned before God and before you … to die"; J. W. 7.154: "condemned to death"; J. W. 7.327: "doomed to perdition" [as Thackeray, LCL, translates it]).

… here is what I would do.

Also did a Bible Word Study (BWS) plus right click on word, clicked lemma, then clicked my highest prioritized lexicon. Noticed The Lexham Analytical Lexicon to the Greek New Testament has three New Testament references and one in Apostolic Fathers so clicked reference to open highest prioritized Apostolic Fathers resource:

BWS Text Searches shows two LXX entries. From BWS lemma section OR right click on word, lemma, choose to open next two highest prioritized lexicons. Apologies to George since BDAG is number 4; personally dreaming of a reformatted BDAG that would be more useful. I just find it hard to reconcile Paul actually stating that Peter is actually condemned before God . . . hence the BWS.
