Synchronizing of Word Bible Commentary for Deuteronomy 1-11

Alan ... I'm going to try to use Libronix as you describe to watch it (I LOVE Libronix, but I also have Logos5).

But seriously: there's no 'big bucks' for upgrading: www.logos.com/installation for the FREE update (which uses all your Libronix books assuming they're not super, super old, and you've synchronized your Libronix to the Logos servers). Also it doesn't over-write your Libronix, so you can easily try it out and still be happy on Libronix.

EDIT: Ok, I tried what you said but I was unable to get WBC-DEU at that location to re-position NRSV backward to chap 4. I tried moving back and forth etc. This doesn't mean the problem doesn't exist; just that I couldn't located it.

I notice you list WBC Deu for chaps 1-11. Did you mean chaps 1-21 as a typo. Maybe it's an older volume? Mine says 'Second edition'.

I am curious by what you mean by being "super, super old" - is 15 years "Super old"? That is when I was gifted Logos 2 and then upgraded to 3 when it came out. I bought the Word Commentary set when I was in seminary back before 2000. Going to try your link and see how it works for me.

Yes ... my language 'super-old' described Logos2 (sorry if offended).

I'm not an expert on Logos2 but periodically (this week for example) someone has a Logos2 disk trying to move it to Logos5.

But your case, you're in Libronix. So if you can see the WBC volume there, and you syncronize your licenses with Logos (in Libronix), then it 'should' be no problem in Logos5 (Logos 4.6 if you're in XP; they keep both up to date for now).

If/when you do get Logos5 running, your first take will likely be 'What?!'. But it's super-powerful; I use both as I mentioned but most people just go with Logos5. The key to its power is the indexing (which chews up some time, the first time you upgrade).

Logos 5 seemed to install just fine. But now I have a couple of questions.
1. Why do you use both Logos 5 and Libronix?

2. Is there a way to import my notes from Libronix to Logos 5 (I have copious amounts of notes I have written over the years)

3. Is there a video I can watch to help me get a better feel for Logos 5?

4. I am a bit confused. Am I on a test drive of Logos 5 or have I fully updated to it? When I had looked at it on line, logged in as myself, the page said it would cost me $1500 to switch over to Logs 4 Gold (which seemed the closest to what I was using on Libronix.

In order of your questions:

1. I use both for two reasons: (1) Logos4 and Logos5 went to the cloud support for the product. I'm not yet on board with the long-term implications of that. So I keep my Libronix (and Logos still sells older Libronix resources; new ones are Logos4/5 only). (2) I don't like Logos slurping up my notes, highlights, etc. Most people however DO like the convenience of Logos being available on multiple platforms and being coordinated. FaithLife is really the proof of a very good idea (I'm just old fashioned).

2. Importing notes is at: http://wiki.logos.com/Importing_Notes_from_LDLS3 Some note features don't import. So make sure you keep your older Libronix just in case there might be a hiccup.

3. Videos are at: http://www.logos.com/videos Note that Logos5 is really a re-badged Logos4 with some more features. So, Logos4 videos are helpful too. These are also very good: http://wiki.logos.com/Logos_5_Video_Tutorials (down to earth)

4. The Logos5 you installed is the real deal. The $1500 is a Logos advertisement. Some other new users have become also confused thinking they can't upgrade, when they already did! After you explore a little you might want advice on expanding Logos5 functionality. The Logos4 'crossgrade' and the Logos5 'crossgrade' both are inexpensive and bring more heavy-duty engine power in (if you like original languages, reverse interlinears, etc).

Thanks for the links to the prices for crossgrades. I am not sure if it matters, but when I installed Logos 5, I had to install it on an external drive because my HD was too full for it to fit. But I will look at the logs things and forward what it shows

From your log, the crash is related to trying to import a particular verse list as below:

It looks as though there is something in there - looks like a Bible reference - which is invalid and the import routine isn't handling it cleanly.

Can you see anything obviously wrong in that particular verse list "Complain and Grumble"?

If not, as a temporary measure, you may be able to import other things and not verse lists using the specific import commands - which are documented in the Logos help file

Okay, I must be doing something wrong. I have three parallel windows but they are not synced. Does Logos work like Libronix where you can have a window open for a Bible, another translation or language and a commentary and have them all move forward as you read the bible text you have selected?

I have BHS up, NRSV and Word Bible Commentary. I selected the setting with the little Venn Diagram that says "Links to open panels" Is that how it is suppose to work?

No - "link to open panels" affects how verses referenced in one panel are highlighted in another

Okay, I looked at the list "Complain and Grumble" didn't see anything unusual in it. Decided that I really didn't need to keep it and so I deleted it and a few other lists that I decided I didn't need. I went back to Logos tried "Import All again" - Crashed again. I took the steps to format the lists and stuff like your page had suggested.. so I am not sure what the issue is. Is there a way to import only items that you desire. Mostly for me its not the lists as much as the notes I have made on a variety of Bible Passages.

This time it looks as though the issue is with another Verse List - "Generosity and giving" - but there are no details as to what the problem is.

Is there a way to import only items that you desire. Mostly for me its not the lists as much as the notes I have made on a variety of Bible Passages.

Try the command "Import Notes" and see if that gets your notes imported

Okay, I think i fixed it. The issue seems to be with the verse lists and some reference it didn't like or recognize so I moved all the verses to another location, ran the "Import All" command/tool and it went off without a hitch. Now I juts need to see of all my notes made it. Thanks for those of you who have helped me.

I have noticed some differences in Logos from Libronix and not sure if or how I can get around them. One that is bugging me has to do with notes. I Libronix I could have the note linked to a verse, a section or just to the portion I hi-lighted. How does it work in Logos. I made a like today, and after typing for 20 minutes, i realized I was in a different translation. And I went to go back to my preferred translation, but the link wasn't there. Is there a way to create a link that will show up in more than one translation of the Bible specifically linked to the chapter and verse of the Bible as opposed to just being in one of my Bible's?

In Logos 4 / 5 there are basically two options.

you can select a portion of text and associate a note with it - this uses the "By Selection" option in the right-click menu. In this mode, the text you have selected is highlighted but the highlight and the note are only visible in the resource in which the note was created
you can select a reference (verse or passage) and associate a note with it - this uses the "By Reference" option in the right-click menu. In this mode, the text is not highlighted, there is an icon at the beginning of the passage and the icon and note are visible in all "similarly indexed resources". So, for example, a note created in this way against a Bible would be visible in all Bibles and Commentaries (which have similar indexes)

For this, specifically, you need the "By Reference" option.

Thanks Graham, it did. Too bad I didn't notice it before I started posting notes. There doesn't seem to be a way to change them back. So I guess I will just cut and paste and delete to achieve the desired result.
