sermon prep logos 5 use

I'm also very interested in the process people go through each time they open program to begin research on a sermon topic. I generally read through the text several times using different translations and then study the original languages dependent upon which words interest me. Then at some point I try to read to several commentaries to see which is the best. Please let me know what your process is and how I can improve mine.

Here is a way of reading the text that is very helpful. This is not a method I came up with but I use it on occassion.

Successive readings with an angle

First reading - The Mood and atmosphere

This first reading needs to be done aloud or read quickly (Avoid attention to detail you are not looking for a theme. You are not looking for an outline.)
Questions for consideration
1. Is the language of this book fast paced? Is it quick or is it slow?
2. Are there a lot of friendly references?
3. How does the book make you feel?
4. What kind of literature is the book? Apocalyptic, Poetry, Sermonic, Letter, History, Ect.

Second reading- The recipients

Who where they and what were they like?
1. You are looking for two kinds of information. What the text actually states about these people (where they lived, are they saints are they materialistic, some specific things that are stated in the text).
2. Implied. As you read ask yourself why would the author include this particular information? Look at what is stated but ask yourself what is implied. Make sure you distinguish that which is specifically stated and that which is implied. You may go too far with your implications. Be careful.
  1. Use a pen and paper for this reading.
  2. Location. Where are these people located? Environment. What is the environment in which these people are living? Culture. Customs, Values, Morals, ECT. Problems. Knowledge level. Are they immature, New converts, Long time Christians, have they been well taught. Relationship to the author. Political situation.

Third reading- Occasion and Purpose

What is happening with the author? What is the situation with the writer? Is the writer in prison or far away/who is he writing to?
What is happening with the recipients? Are their tensions between the writer and the church?
Discovering the purpose.
1. Why did he write the book? Openly stated purpose. Deduced purpose.

Forth reading- Special emphasis and theme

Theme: One main point or thrust.
Special emphasis: Topics of importance. These are topics that receive relatively long development and emphasis.

Fifth reading- paragraphing and outlining

A logical outline of the book.
NOT ALL SCRIPTURE WAS MEANT TO BE OUTLINED AND PARAGRAPHED (Example: Psalms)

Secondary Literature

Now it is time to review secondary literature
1. Bible Encyclopedias, Bible Dictionaries, General Introductions to the Bible, Other. Chose three or four particular source materials (not all from the same source).
2. Find out: Who wrote the book? What was the date of the book? The destination to which the book was written. The recipients. The occasion. The purpose. The theme. The special emphasis. What kind of style was the book written in? Are there unusual features in the book?
3. Compare with your initial readings and findings.
