Personal Books - Alternate Spellings

What is the best way to handle alternate spellings in Personal books? I choose to leave the original spellings found in old books, but I still want them to be useful for searches and such. I would like to find the alternate spelling when searching on the modern spelling.

A few examples would be Baalbec vs Baalbek Karnac vs Karnak colour vs color

Would you just put a milestone in? [[@Headword:Baalbek]]Baalbec

I can say that I have left them "as is", even if it means that there are multiple spellings of "Melanchthon" and "Zwingle" in my library.

I figure if 16th/17th Century spellings are coming back in Shakespeare editions, it is OK for some 19th Century flavor to remain in 19th Century texts... Yeah, the language has changed. But it isn't that bad...

You can't search for a headword i.e. you won't get a hit for "Baalbek". So the best way is to be aware of alternates and search for

Baalbec, Baalbek

Karnac, Karnak

colour, color

Maybe what you want to do is drop a line into the PBB that says something like 'sometimes Baalbec is often printed as Baalbek' then when you search for 'Baalbec' you will find your note and then remember to add the other spelling to your search.

Depends how true to the original you wish to remain

a new footnote marker might interrupt original footnotes as well as insert something that doesn't belong
you might add the comment to a Preface, but again, it doesn't belong.

So add it to the Library information for the book in the PB tool

Thanks for the input everyone. Sounds like I will just put Baalbec [Baalbek] and note at the end of the document stating that things in brackets have been added for clarity, or something. Compromise - use both. Self defining.

I am working on The Giant Cities of Bashan and Syria's Holy Places - Porter 1877. Should be ready for release to the public domain next week. I might not be able to include the pictures in the docx though.
