Papal Encyclicals Product Confusion

I had posted last week when the Encyclicals of John XXIII became available for pre-order.  The question posed was asking what the difference (other than Latin edtitions) were these volumes compared to the same encyclicals in the larger The Papal Encyclicals: 1740-1981 set.  Specifically, I'm trying to understand if there are any qualities of the new, smaller volumes (formatting, tagging, etc.) that are improvements or enhancements over the large set.  Again, other than the Latin...I get that part...the Latin is not in the larger set.

I see now that Logos is offering additional smaller (subsets) of Papal Encyclicals from Pius XI and Pius XII.  All of these appear to be in the larger set.

All of this is a little confusing to me.  I have the large set and would greatly appreciate understanding what the specific differences are...other than the Latin.

It would be a big help if Andrew or Louis or Alex or anyone with specific knowledge of the Catholic products mentioned could chime in.  Any insight is helpful.  Smile

Blessings,

Steve

Look at the details: [bottom of the pages]

    266. Princeps Pastorum
    267. Mater et Magistra
    268. Aeterna Dei sapientia
    269. Paenitentiam agere
    270. Pacem in terris

Encyclicals of Pope John XXIII in English & Latin (2 vols.) $20

Most of the time if you own something the BUY bar will GRAY out [check the large set that you own]

But the first sub set that you pointed out [John XXIII] did not GRAY out - Maybe because it includes the Latin and the other sets do not so we are seen as not owing them.

Wait until Monday when they get back to work.

These seem to have additional works - from what was listed

I'm confused too. From the product pages I thought these included different, more official, English translations, but when I compared the beginning of Pacem in Terris, they looked exactly the same. Why do we have to pay for the same texts a second time?

I'll send an e-mail to Andrew and ask.

Some additional comparison between the Pius XI subset and the larger Papal Encyclicals set (not counting the Latin...just English):

In Pius XI Collection, not in Papal Encyclicals:

          Divini Illius Magistri

          Fin dal Primo Momento

          Firmissimam Constantiam'

In Papal Encyclicals, not in Pius XI Collection:

          Nos es muy concida

My head is spinning....  [:S]   Blah.....

    Sorry for the confusion.

We've licensed these, with the Latin, directly from Libreria Editrice Vaticana. For the English translations, there is indeed overlap between the Pieran Press 5 volume collection.

Like the other sets we've done from Libreria Editrice Vaticana, the English translations are the same as what is available on the Vatican website. I haven't done a complete analysis, but it does appear that in many cases, the English translation they offer is the same as what's in the 5 volume set. So, if you've already got the 5 volume collection, the value for you would mainly be in the Latin.

The apparent differences in the list of contents for the Encyclicals of Pius XI are just due to some encyclicals being listed by Latin title in one place and by Italian or Spanish title in another. To confuse things further, it looks like our product page has repeated an error of the Vatican website that lists a couple of these under both titles.

    • Divini Illius Magistri = Rappresenti in Terra (listed twice)
    • Fin dal Primo Momento = Ubi arcano Dei consilio (listed twice)
    • Firmissimam Constantiam = Nos es muy concida

I'll see that the product page is updated to remove these duplications.

    Thanks, Louis.

Will there be special pricing for those of us who already have the English versions in the Pieran Press 5 volume collection?
