Copyright Issue?

Are we allowed to copy a portion (say a paragraph) of some cotent (say from TDNT) and post it on a forum for others to see? I purchased the software and was responding to a Forum question by posting a little info on a word someone had a question about. OK? NOT OK?

If you are not sure, find two or three sources, write your own responses, and cite all the references you used. Then you know you are safe. Or consult a lawyer.

On the other hand, I agree with Joe - provided you cited your source.

Jason, I would not use more than a paragraph. That would be pushing the limits of fair use, but a paragraph or less with a proper citation is okay.

From EERDMANS (TDNT):

Guidelines: Use must comply with all of the following guidelines.

No more than 5,000 words, in total, from one Eerdmans volume may be reproduced without permission.

No more than 5% of the source work may be reproduced and no
complete poems, children's books, or songs may be reproduced without
permission.

No more than 300 consecutive words may be reproduced without permission.

Eerdmans material may not make up more than 5% of the new work.

Ellipses (…) may not be used in ways that alter the ideas of the original work.

Eerdmans material must be properly cited in a manner that conforms to a scholarly style.

Yes, quoting one paragraph for non-commercial purposes surely falls under "fair use" as long as you cite your source. For more specifics on "fair use" and copyright law, read "A Writers’ Guide to Fair Use" by Howard G. Zaharoff (a partner with the law firm Morse, Barnes-Brown & Pendleton; he specializes in intellectual property law among other things, and represents publishers and authors).

What? You've really been threatened with deletion of your posts by the mods for just quoting one paragraph or so from a theological reference work, giving credit to where you quoted it from? That seems absurd. Are you sure there's nothing else about your posts that might have irritated the mods and made them start taking sides against you?

Rosie, Since all three of JasonRogers' posts are in this thread it appears to be a different forum he has been quoting in. Since each forum has it's own rules about post content they could very well delete his posts even if he does fall under "Fair-Use." The Logos forum is (usually [:D] ) a nice and friendly place Other places may treat you differently.

However, Paul Golder listed Eerdman's guidelines for quotes. Considering your new content must be 19x as much as the 5000 word limit, you could end up with a 100,000 word post. ........Now that will get you in trouble!

Yes, I know. I didn't intend to imply I thought he was talking about this forum. He was pretty clear about that. I didn't feel the need to repeat his clarity in my quote, but maybe I should have. Sorry for being misleading.
