Is 16 GB enough for a tablet?

I'm in the middle of deciding which new tablet I'd like to get which will be primarily used for reading books and not serious study. From experience I'd be interested in hearing whether people think that 16 GB is enough for that purpose or what thoughts they had on this subject.
FYI - I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the ipad mini for it's size and the fact that I already use an iphone.

I would say yes, provided you don't fill it up with too many other things.
But, if you can go with a larger capacity, do so.

Bruce,
It sounds like you are planning to use yours pretty much like I use my tablet. I have found that 16 is plenty enough. I have several other apps that I use, and in Logos I keep the commentaries, etc. that I am currently using downloaded. I am using about half of the space available. I am using an android tablet, but I think that ipad would be comparable in space needed.

I'm just trying to determine if 32 GB is worth the extra $100.

depends on your library, and how much you want access to offline.
History shows never enough space, if you can afford it I would, but 16 is enough for majority

I have a 16 gig 1st Gen ipad that does the job great with plenty of room to spare. I do not have a large of number resources downloaded (several English bibles and a few other books) and I usually have anywhere from 9-11 gb of free space. I tend to swap some downloaded resources out with others that are more useful for what I amd studying or reading at the time.

If you aren't planning to download an extensive part of your library (which I discourage anyways), then 16 GB should be fine IF you aren't planning on adding large amounts of photos, music & video. My folks bought us the 64 GB original version. I recently sold it to Amazon and bought a 16 GB refurbished 3rd gen from Apple.

I went for 32 on Android and 64 on iPad. Overkill if you don't use your tablet as a more portable version of your desktop or laptop, but remember how quickly we think of enough computing resources proves to be insufficient over time.
Keeping more resources already downloaded onto your tablet is a great time saver if you expect to be away from an internet connection.

Granted, but performance of the app seems to decrease with large amounts of downloaded resources... Also, the best solution for glitches that happen from time to time is to delete the app, which results in the loss of downloaded resources. The app was designed to be used primarily in the "cloud." For those reasons, I suggest downloading only the resources you use most often plus those you are currently reading unless absolutely neccesary.

I have a 32gb nexus but a 16 GB should be sufficient. My logos app takes up 8-9 GB and that's a majority of my library.
All the best,

I've heard this before but I'm not sure why. Do you know?

Sorry, I don't know why... But mobile devices aren't as powerful as modern desktops & laptops. Also, downloads are more apt to be inturupted, which can cause errors in resources. Sometimes users need to delete a resource and redownload it... That is obviously not an issue if the resource wasn't downloaded in the first place.

Thanks everyone for your input. I'm thinking that 16 GB will probably work fine for what I am considering.

One thing that I do not recall in this has been growth. It sounds like 16 G is fine now but how much was needed say two years ago? 8 G? [I don't know - I am asking]
Can you afford the next step up to 32 G? [with out killing your budget?] More is better but more is more money.
[But you can not add memory latter - and most do not have SD card slots]

This is my exact question. Is it worth $100 more (which is the current cost here in Canada)? One concern that I have with the iPad mini is that I don't think that it has an expansion slot.

32 G is one third more and the 64 G is double the price - and it is buy now and forever hold your peace. have you reviewed the list of apps and seen what else might trap you into using more memory? [best of luck][[Also you do know that THEY are just waiting for you to BUY and then they will lower the price or they will release the iPad micro Or .... ]] [;)]0 -

Isn't that always the case. I just have to wait for next month...then next month...then next month...

I already have an iphone and know how much I use there. I think the key is not to consider it a "storage device" but rather a "using device" and eliminate everything that I don't use (photos, videos and even Logos resources etc.)

None of the iPads have an expansion port. I have "the new ipad" 16gb, and wish I'd bought the 32gb.
If its only 100$? do it. I use mine ALOT for reading. But very little for reading within logos, though I'll pull my ipad out at church on occasion.L2 lvl4 (...) WORDsearch, all the way through L10,

I'll answer the question but the question isn't going to help much since my usage is probably not representative.
I have about ~100mb in games (angry Birds haha!), about 12gb tied to seminary related activities (recordings of classes and so forth), about 1gb in music (more when I travel), ~1gb tied to iOS overhead, and the rest is logos resources.L2 lvl4 (...) WORDsearch, all the way through L10,

Since I use my tablet to record audio/video of classes, my use of Logos is minimal. PLUS I don't find the iOS app to be as helpful as the windows app. Perhaps I just need to use it more, perhaps its just my own reticence to change. But never the less, its seldom used.

To make reading at the computer a good experience you need a comfortable desk chair (perfectly positioned); a large coffee mug (filled with freshly ground joe); and at my age a good pair of glasses. [;)]

16 GB is all I have and I use it almost daily with the Logos app and have no problems. Of course you will be limited as to how many books you can download, but if you have an internet connection, you don't need to download the books to your iPad.

Me too. That's why I looking to get something suitable. How many resources to you usually keep on your mobile device? Just the ones you are reading or an assortment of other books too?

Depends, if I know I'm going to use something I always make sure that is on my device. My favorite translation or two, and some commentaries that were useful for a situation and never taken off.

Generally speaking, here is what I keep on my iPad mobile app:
- An assortment of Bible translations.
- The books I cam currently reading.
- A number of other books I plan to read in the near future (but never actually seem to get to). [;)]
- A handful of general purpose resources (i.e. Bible Knowledge Commentary, etc).

Thanks Alabama, That's pretty much what I have on my 16 GB phone right now but I find it difficult to read a book on something that small. I'm coming to the conclusion that I will probably use a tablet the same way.

I find reading on the phone difficult too… which is why my phone has much less resources. Mostly just a few bibles, a general commentary, and a few books I might read if I get stuck somewhere. [:)]

While I have a tablet with 32 gig on my tablet, 26.5 gig of that is available even with my apps all up and running. Among those apps, I use the Logos mobile app with several resources open, Chrome Web browser and Kindle ereader. Given that, I would say 16 Gig would be sufficient. All of that said I am using an Android tablet (ASUS TF-300 with Android 4.2) so it may be different than an iPad in how it manages memory.

Bob - The issue isn't memory (ram), but storage space. The number of programs "running" isn't an issue. A 64 GB device won't let you "run" more apps than a 16 GB device… but it will let you install more. (16/32/64 refers to the storage space on the device, not the ram).

For what its worth, my tablet has 32 internal gb which is enough for everything but my music. That i keep on an external microsd, 32gb and its full. If I did more pictues and vids, I would prob want more space.

I usually have the NICOT/NICNT, BECNT, NAC, ESV Study Bible and a few other single volume commentaries on my ipad, along with a few Bible translations. For this kind of a use, 16 Gb is ample space. But what must be kept in mind, is the other apps that contain books/documents that you use and read. The other ones I have are Kindle and Google Drive and sometimes storing all books/documents from these apps, for offline use, take a considerable amount of space on your device.
I know this wasn't the main topic on hand but I would highly suggest getting an iPad over an android (although I am pro-android) for the following reasons:
- Apple likes their hardware and software to mesh seamlessly for so many reasons and the primary one that I see is that apps don't conflict and drain system resources and so your battery life is phenomenal on Apple products.
- Apps are better written for iOS than the Android, graphically. I wrote some thing on this in the forums. Can read here.If I think of anything else I will update my post. But from a power user who uses and has used Logos, Faithlife and Proclaim on both the Android and iOS devices, I would definitely suggest the iPad over an Android tablet.

Ritchin, thanks for taking time to express your opinions on this. I too have used both the Apple and Android on other devices and agree with you. I think that 16 GB should work for Logos purposes alone but I have to think through how I might use it for other purposes.

True enough Alabama. In my desire for brevity I did mix up two different aspects of tablets. My tablet came with 32 Gig of "storage space". What I should have said was "26.5 gig of that is available even with all of those apps (and many others) installed."Thank you for clarifying my post.0 -

I know, right? I was surprised by that myself. But none of the apps I have installed take up a lot of space. Total space used by apps is 368 Mbytes. The largest are Kindle - 52 Mb and Logos 41 Mb.0
