moving Logos 5 from C: to an external HDD ?

Logos 5 is installed on a notebook which didn't come with a huge HDD. I'm running out of space but just purchased a 1 Terabyte HDD that is USB 3.0 compatible. This computer (about 5 or 6 years old) only has USB 2.0 but the drive will operate on that a bit slower than max.

My question is how best to move Logos 5 from C: to G: - the usb 2.0 ported external drive? I realize it will probably load and operate a bit slower on G: than C: but am not sure how much slower!

Like Alabama I doubt you will be satisfied at all. Assuming you have a SATA 2.0 HDD in your laptop, max transfer speed is 3.0 GB/sec. The USb 2.0 spec calls for 35 MB/sec transfer rate. (I believe these are right, but am not an expert.) That would mean a 100-fold slowdown in disc access speed. That alone would make me look elsewhere.

If your laptop isn't that old, I'd make another suggestion: replace the HDD. Buy a HDD enclosure for your existing HDD and use that to transfer your data. You'll need to have access to a copy of your operating system to set up the new HDD as your c: drive, but after a bit of work, you'd have speed you'd like and a lot more HDD space. I did this a few years back with my previous laptop, replacing a 5400 RPM drive with a 7200 RPM larger drive and noticed a speed increase. You may already have a 7200 RPM drive so will see little speed increase, but certainly no decrease in speed. New HDD's are cheap.

I want to humbly correct some of the data you quoted..

SATA 2 is 3Gb (not GB/s) thats bits not bytes.. 8 bits in a byte. Also thats MAX the interface can handle, not the drive itself. Most harddrives can only handle 50-100MB/sec. (spindle speed 5400 vs 7200, and access time (seek time) come into play also).

External hard drives USB 2 will handle about 30-40MB/sec.

So the OP might see a factor of 3 at most speed decrease. Not 100.

Good to hear some better numbers. Even if the speed is reduced by 1/3 that is significant, especially since installing a new HDD would be no more expensive than buying an external drive.

Thanks to all who responded. I talked today with the fellow I got this system from. He seemed not to want to try replacing a drive in a laptop, nor did he think I could upgrade the USB from 2.0 to 3.0 as it's probably made into the motherboard. He suggested deleting a lot of the garbage that has probably collected on the drive over the years and moving lots of data to the external drive. This way I could just leave Logos on the C drive, not lose any speed and still have plenty of room for indexing, etc. Defraging C will probably help a bit as well. It may be some time before I get this done but I'll probably log back in and let you know what is finally done. For now I'll probably just delete a few programs I no longer use.

Just one more piece of advice: computers can often benefit from "spring cleaning." There may be great value in you deleting EVERYTHING from the computer, including the OS and starting over. Before I switched to Mac, I would do this every 12-18 months. There are too many little programs that clog up the system, including malware and other viruses.
