I think many of us predicted that would happen.

I would be among those who might have preferred NT Wright overall but since he won last year, has already bought what I wanted. So a greater discount on Carson's books looks good for this year.

Yeah..if only Carson has enough "single" books for sale. I'm sure only less than 18 books will offered at 75%. very sad march madness.
If you look at the Best Selling Book chart on logos website.. NONE of the books offered at March Madness are even in the top 60. Another sad story. Nobody has really buying anything from March Madness sales.

The only Carson book I'm interested in that I don't already own is Exegetical Fallacies but I don't see that happening as it didn't last year.

Since DA Carson is the editor of the Pillar's New Testament Commentary Series how about getting all 14 volume bundle for 75% off...that'd be awesome!

It's easier to predict Logos' March Madness bracket than the NCAA's. This is because the true underdogs will never win. When will Ray Comfort EVER beat out DA Carson?? Just another blemish in this new 'author vs author' setup.

So Josh, if you were given complete authority to set up next year's March Madness any way you wanted what would that look like?

"Blemish"? I don't know about that. Honestly, should Ray Comfort EVER beat out Carson? Not in this universe or any parallel ones.
We would all probably like some esoteric resource we've long wanted want to end up in the winner's bracket, but that is pie-in-the-sky. This event gives folks a chance to get "popular" titles at a discount. Expecting anything else is futile.
Besides, Comfort isn't an "underdog"...he's just a dog.
Woof!

And here's another thing. Even if Ray Comfort managed to publish an extremely popular book, DA Carson would still beat him out every time because DA Carson has MORE extremely popular books. In such a case, Ray's hypothetical amazing resource would most likely never see Championship discounts.
Instead what we are going to see is just a select handful of very popular authors making to the final four each year. DA Carson has a good chance of winning again next year. Did he not get second place last year? This is ridiculously unfair.

I preferred when Logos had the tourny be 'resource vs resource' instead of 'author vs author'. Not only are we not voting blindly. We could actually see certain popular resources at Final Four discounts that might not have well-known authors attached to them.

Yes...and some people will be tickled pink to get Carson titles @ 75% off. I am thinking that after 3-4 years, Carson and Wright won't be the winners...someone else will move in.
But at least some of us can take comfort that it won't be Comfort. [:P]
For what it's worth, I think it kinda stinks that most deep discount sales are for things I usually have as a Portfolio owner. Those who have invested the most tend to get the least benefit from most Logos sales...even though I have dozens of things I would like a chance to pick up.

Resource vs resource provides opportunity for only 64 titles to be discounted, and only a single volume to be the winner. Author vs author has provided opportunity for hundreds of resources to receive discounted prices, with multiple volumes to have 75% off.
Resource vs resource still would not get Ray Comfort past round 1—he simply has not written anything worthwhile.

I think a lot of people may be using my strategy. I am waiting until the March Madness sale is finalized before deciding which items to purchase. I wouldn't want to blow my budget on lower discounted items and not be able to afford deeper discounts that I really want. Last year I picked up a large number of volumes in the March Madness sale. I look forward to this sale and I appreciate the fact that there are a lot of authors and books to choose from in the March Madness sale. Though I haven't read much of Ray Comfort, the comments on this and related threads have piqued my interest. I think I will pick up one or two of his books
and check him out. Even the authors that lose out in the first round result in a 30% discount. It may not even be close to 75% that the champion gives us but it is still a significant saving. I can hardly wait until the champion is declared and I can create my March Madness list. Go Carson Go!!!

You make a great point about those who have invested most getting the least benefit from Logos sales but what would you propose differently to change that?

I should re-phrase my question to "realistic proposals" (although I like that one)

Each year, the winner should be disqualified from the following year's competition perhaps?

That's pretty simple...just offer items that aren't part of the Portfolio collection for sale. Just to be clear, I'm NOT talking about WBC, ICC, AYB, AYBD, NICOT/NT, Hermenia, or any other major set that goes on sale once or twice a year EVERY year. Those are popular, but if you have Portfolio, you probably have those (although I don't have all of those). If you need ideas, Logos, you can always take a look at my Want List. [:P]

You misunderstood my hypothetical scenario with Ray. There are many fantastic resources on Logos that have authors that would not do well in a tournament like this. Sometimes these authors only have one or two books available on Logos. These resources, no matter how fantastic, will never see deep discounts in a tournament based not only on author popularity but, also, on an author's oeuvre.
This type of tournament caters to a certain type of author. We will see the same finalists year after year.

You can't win if you're not in the race. Logos has hundreds of authors to choose from; what makes you so sure Carson and Wright will appear every year?

As it stands, the NPP issue is one of the hottest topics of Biblical studies, and Wright and Carson are the two best-known advocates for each position That is why they garner the votes...people want to read their work. That said, once people HAVE their works, why would they vote for them again? At some point, the lion's share of active post-purchase, web site reading, forum-using Logos customers will have purchased what they want from these two, and they will then move along to other authors. That said, I expect both of these guys will be popular for a while to come, though they won't necessarily make it to the elite eight or final four each year. Logos can keep them out of the bracket, but I am fairly sure they will only do that if they perceive that both of them have been "bought out" AND "the customer base doesn't have the sense to not vote for authors whose works they already own.
On that last point, it is fairly common for customers, being human, to imagine that the world revolves around them, and imagine that their experience is the only experience that a) exists, b) matters, c) anyone ought to have. If they bought all of Wright's stuff last year, then NO ONE should vote for them this year. When things don't go their way...well, they don't call it March Madness for no reason.

[:O] This is a joke, right? Either way, removing some authors still does not address the main concern I had.

I prefer not to wait four or five years for this to happen. Besides this is assuming the membership of the "active post-purchase, web site reading, forum-using Logos customers" stays relatively the same over time. With thousands of library-lite new users each year, it's impossible to say whether Carson's dominance will ever wane.

Except that no one could buy "all of Wright's stuff" last year, since only half was included.

I'm just surprised with the amount of people that participated in the voting during March Madness.. I didn't know people were that interested.
