Question about new information panel feature.

In 1 Samuel 16:21 the KJV reads "And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer." The information panel in the translated section identifies the first "he" as Saul. Most commentaries agree but why? What is Logos basing this decision on? Is there any grammatical reason? The "and"s in this verse are waw sequentials. Doesn't that suggest that the "he" is David (David came and stood and loved and became)? Thanks for your help!

There's some ambiguity in the tagging of Hebrew bibles:

LHB --> David/Saul as the object

LHI --> David/Saul as the object

AFAT --> David/Saul as the object

BHS/WIVU --> David/Saul as the object

BHS/WHM --> Saul as the person loving

The NRSV, NASB, ESV, NIV, NIV 2011 state David as the object.

LEB (Logos) has a footnote that declares Saul is the one loving.

Anchor Yale Bible was pretty up-front but 'moves on':
'The original, as reflected in MT, admits of such ambiguity (MT: lit. “And David came to Saul, and he stood before him, and he loved him greatly, and he became his weapon-bearer.”) that LXX-L finds it necessary to introduce explicit subjects (“Saul … David”) into the last two clauses. The same is necessary in English.'

WBC really gets busy, even managing to bring in Michal (I always WAS suspicious Michal didn't REALLY love David):
'Though the Hebrew says ambiguously “he loved him,” we are probably to understand this to mean that Saul loved David. Thompson (VT 24 [1974] 334–38), building on an earlier study by Moran, ascribed political overtones to the word “love” (cf. also the love of Jonathan for David, 1 Sam 18:1, 3 and 20:17, the love of all Israel and Judah for David, 18:16, the love of the king’s servants, 18:22, and even perhaps the love of Michal, 18:20).'

Actually I thought the question was likely to be the 'spirit' in the surrounding verses. What a mess (translations).
