Searching Jesus Quoting the Old Testament

Hello all,

I've been experimenting with different searches but I haven't had much luck. I was wondering is there a search operator one could use to find all the times Jesus quoted out of a particular book of the Old Testament? For example, every time Jesus quotes from Genesis.

So far the only thing I can figure out is to use a book like Old Testament Quotations and Allusions in the New Testament and go through the Genesis verses one by one.

Thanks,

Ryan

You could create a passage list of the "words of Christ" using a wild card; a passage list of all the all the OT quotes from that resource and then do an intersection of those passages.

Keep in mind that wild card searches are not optimized, so they can take several minutes to compile.

I just did this (I already had a passage list of the WOC in the NASB95 from a long time ago) and ended up with 83 results in the intersection of the two lists.

No such thing as an easy Search. Start with a Passage List of Words of Christ, by individual verse (no ranges).

Next run a Passage Guide on an OT book like Genesis, where the Parallel Passages section will give you a synopsis of applicable NT passages that you can put into a Passage List e.g. Genesis Quotes in NT (recording individual verses in the Gospels). Then repeat for another OT book.

Finally perform an intersection of each OT Quotes list with the Words of Christ list.

  • Thread => search for quotes of psalms came to mind since the NET Bible footnotes have quotation from.

The formula "quotation from" is not used everywhere e.g. "quotation is primarily from". If you want text which alludes to the OT there is another formula e.g. "are an allusion to". The NET also misses an allusion at Mt 11:5 by having a footnote at the end of 11:4 without any formula words.

the more productive method would be:

    • Generate a PL from  Words of Christ (WOC) in Gospels --> wildcard search
    • Generate a PL from NA27 restricted to the Search Field "OT Quotation", which seems very reliable for Quotes and Allusions --> wildcard search
    • Generate a PL from the intersection of the two PL  e.g. OT Quotes from Jesus  -->I get 106 passages
    • You can now document the NT verses in PL's for each book of the OT listed in the Parallel Passages section of Passage Guide:-

    5554.OT Quotes from Jesus.zip

Note that I entered a range but the actual verses are Matt 4:4, 4:7.

This method is less intensive than correlating passages in the way I suggested previously.

Wow, thanks for all the help guys. I appreciate it. I'm saddened that with all the advanced search features that Logos has, that there isn't a simpler way.

Regardless, I appreciate all of your help and advice.

    Thanks.
