Forum bug: attempting to hyperlink an image gives script error

Repro steps:

1. Start a new post
2. Click Insert Attachments/Media button
3. Browse to select a jpg file from your computer, and click Insert to insert it.
4. Click Insert/Edit Link button
5. Enter (or paste) a valid URL in the Link URL box
6. Click Insert

Result: This error message:

System: Vista Ultimate SP1 64-bit, IE 8.0.

What you can't do is make the picture link to something besides itself (that's what the link is).

If you want to link to a source you would have to do that in the text itself.

A picture links to the full-sized version of itself by default anyway when you insert it, so you don't need to set up a hyperlink to it. But you can make it link to another site. That's what I did here. But I had to do it by editing the HTML manually (clicked on the HTML button and changed the URL the <a href=> tag was pointing to. I couldn't do it via the forum's hyperlink UI. So I still claim this is a bug in the forum UI.

While my reason for linking a picture offsite was totally for fun this time (on the timewasting hijack thread), I can envision times when I'd want to link a thumbnail image to a training vdeo I've made that I've posted offsite, for example.

The forum software Logos is using is pretty limited and not very user friendly. I don't think it's a bug. It's only a bug, if it's designed to work in the first place. This just isn't very good forum software. [:(]

It's by design that you can. I hope you didn't think I'm an "untoward type." I didn't hack it or anything. There is an HTML button on the ribbon in Compose mode. If you click it, it brings up the HTML source of just your current post (you can't edit other people's or the whole thread, thankfully), where you can edit it. Obviously it should only be used by people who know HTML. But if someone goofs up the HTML, the worst they can do is goof up their own post.

Yes, I know it's limited and might not have been meant to handle this scenario. But I'm a software developer, and I know a bug when I see one. It's a bug. The JavaScript script croaked saying there was some internal failure in the software. Trying to reference a null pointer. That should never happen in bug-free software, even if it's got a limited or badly designed UI. If it wasn't designed to work in the first place they either shouldn't have allowed me to click the Insert/edit link button when I had a picture selected, or they should have failed gracefully. Causing an IE script to choke with an internal error is a bug. I'm not saying it's Logos's fault. But I believe they do have the ability to edit the forum code and fix bugs that are in it. I'm not saying they'll think this is worth fixing, since it'll probably pretty rare, and I know a workaround.

I've gone further and looked at the .js file in question, at the line number where the error was reported, and found where the problem is located:

In that boldfaced line, childNodes is null, and the code is trying to reference a field in childNode if it were a valid object. Fail! The code should test for null first before trying to do that. I haven't taken the time to understand the entire script, so there might be a better solution, but I still assert that this is a bug.

OK, here's a compromise. I might still go back to the old one after a while -- it's my signature avatar, after all. But I'll let this one stay for a few days so people can see what I look like. There's no way to zoom in on a larger version of the picture here like there is on Facebook profile pictures.
