How Soon is Soon?

I have refrained from installing the betas as I await a stable release, but as I have read the release notes, I was looking to find something like "importing notes" -- you know the "Arriving Soon" missing features which were advertised as coming soon at the end of October and sooner than the 2010 First Quarter features. I recall also a post from Bob asking for note sets to be tested. Have I missed something?

I have Beta4 installed and there still isn't any ability to import notes, or highlighting from L3.
I don't know how soon we'll see this, but I suspect that it will be sometime after the NIV and NLT reverse interlinears are done, since note importing will need to be tested with those resources as well.

Very soon. We're working on performance and testing (and fixing for) a large number of user-supplied sample note files. We want to ensure that it works well out of the box.
It'll be available as part of a beta soon.

Thank you, Bob, for the reply. Sounds good!

Gerald, which mouse routines are you needing to make L4 more than a toy for you?

I use my trackball for reading text. I click down on the center wheel and scroll up/down and left/right with the ball. It works in L3, it works here in the forum, it works in every single Windows program except in L4. I can't imagine releasing a piece of software without this function! Why can't Logos simply link to Windows mouse subroutines to make this work? Also, if no one else scrolls text the way I do, how on earth do they do it? Am I the only entity that uses my mouse/trackball to scroll text?
Also I know I'm not the only one who wants control on the mouse center wheel so it doesn't scroll three lines of text each time it's incremented. Can't that routine be linked to a Windows subroutine as well so it can be adjusted via the Windows Control Panel? This has been a problem with Logos for as long as I can remember.

That is now working in the beta's. It's actually tied to WPF rather than Logos. But it's working now.Gerald P. Swetsky said:I use my trackball for reading text. I click down on the center wheel and scroll up/down and left/right with the ball.
Can't speak for the number of lines per wheel "tick".

Well, I must be missing something. Mine scrolls up and done with the wheel just fine. What did Technical Support say when you reported the problem?
BTW, I checked both Beta 4 and SR7 - Both scroll fine.

Gerry is referring to the ability to push down on the wheel once and then without touching the wheel move the mouse up and down to scroll through material. That is missing from SR-7 but works in Beta 4.

Terry you must be running the beta because it didn't work even as of SR7.

While we are talking about this feature, the one I miss that worked in L3 was the extra button on the LHS of some mice that normally when clicked allowed you to go 'back' one page. It works like the back arrow in a browser window. I'd sure like to see that one return to L4.

Ahhh... Ok. Thanks.

Actually, I run them both. But I misunderstood what he was describing.

Yes, and I was told it was working in the beta prior to the release of SR7; so why was it not included??? I'm waiting for the next release from Logos rather than playing with another beta.

Logos is pretty good about listening to its users - most of the time. This has been discussed more than once in the newsgroups over the years.

No, it wasn't working prior to SR7. I first noticed it working in Beta 2 of 4.0a.
I'm looking at it working right now, and it works just like it did in L3 - a little jerky, if you have a lot of resources linked, but otherwise very nice.
According to Bob P., we should be test a couple more things before 4.0a goes Gold (including note and highlight importing). So don't expect smooth auto-scrolling before the 1st of the year (IMHO).

They told me they had a version working at Logos prior to SR7. Possibly it wasn't in a beta before then. Sorry, I misspoke.

Hi, I'm still using Sr7 and my scroll wheel rolls pages up & down - is this what we are talking about?

I DID read the thread - I just misunderstood. People do sometimes!!!

No, at this point there are two issues.
1. Clicking the center mouse button in most programs generates a double arrow and you can then drag and set your scroll speed. This didn't work in Sr7 and now works in Beta 4.
2. without clicking the center mouse wheel, if you roll it, each click can be set for a given number of lines (usually 3) in Windows. Even with that windows setting set to 1 line, Logos typically scrolls 3-4 lines per click.

Everything is now answered, or should be, except for one thing.
When I read through my text, be it a Bible, commentary or whatever, I have only one way of scrolling my text. That is by using the scroll bar arrows on the right side of the open window. You see, I'm rather on in years and if I rotate the scroll wheel or use the arrow keys, I frequently and momentarily lose my place. Bor-ing!! I frequently go up and down in my reading and have a set way of doing this.
For those of you who are not using the beta, how in the world do you scroll your text - or do you?

Gerald,
Before the beta started working I just hit the page down button.

Thank you, Bob.
I really appreciate the care you guys take to test thoroughly before release.
My strong preference is to have software that works and works well, even if we have to wait for some things.
(And I wanted you and your team to know that there are end users who value that approach.)

Bob,
At the direction of Bradley Grainger, I installed the Logos 4 Beta version on a different computer... I
imported all of my notes... For the most part, all of the data came in
clean (as best as I can tell), and the Bible verse reference Hyperlinks
look to have been created. I have not checked them all, of course, but
spot checking looks good. So, from an importing point of view, it
looks pretty good to me. Some of the formatting from my original notes
files did not come through clean, but, there were always some issues in
the notes of LDLS3 with other than the default fonts. The font stuff
seems to operate better in L4, actually. So, it seems like the only thing I am missing in L4 Notes handling
is the ability to organize my notes, the way I could in LDLS3. Please
see earlier post with snapshot of my LDSL3 notes file (http://community.logos.com/forums/p/8753/71228.aspx#71228). I used to be
able to treat a Notes file almost like a book. I could arrange the
different notes within the file in whatever order I wanted. I could
indent notes, to form an outline. All of this was visible in the left
pane of the notes window, and I did not actually see the notes until I
clicked on one in that left pane. Then, on the right pane, I would see
the full text of the note in the note editing pane. This allowed me to
manage my notes almost like a book, with chapters and sub-headings...
This was VERY convenient for teaching.L4 does not have any of these capabilities. The notes in a notes
file are all open and visible at the same time. When a new note is
added, it is added at the bottom. Hence, in order to get to it, I need
to scroll all the way to the end of the note file, to get to my latest
note. Also, there is no capability to rearrange note order in a notes
file. I don't know about others, but I tend to bounce around, working
on different things at different times. Being able to rearrange the
notes in a file is of great benefit. At a minimum, what I would like to have is the ability to collapse
the text of a note, so that only the note titles are visible. I would
also like the capability to move notes up and down within the notes
file. What I would REALLY like is for a note file to be treated just
like any other book within L4, with a table of contents that is
organized like a nested tree. That way, I can collapse and expand any
section of the tree I want, just like I do for any other book. I
really like the >> that opens and the << that closed the
table of contents in L4. Would it be possible to use this same code to
organize and display notes files. If it can be done, I think I would
be fully ready to move over from LDSL3 to L4. How do I formally make
that request?0 -
