Was I really supposed to pay nearly $140 to upgrade from Logos 1 for Mac to this Alpha version? I know alpha is before beta, but this seems barely useable. Seems like the payment should have been in the opposite direction?!
Was I really supposed to pay nearly $140 to upgrade
No there is no cost involved in going from Logos 1.2 to the Alpha. They don't sell their software. However, they do have some pretty good library upgrades. And they also have some pretty cool resources available in the new versions as well. For instance, the people places and things? Did I get that right? In months to come, this alpha will turn to beta and full version with all the features that you are now missing. If you can use parallels and a virtual machine you can do that now. Until the alpha stabilizes, I will not be messing with it myself. So don't be discouraged. It is easy to make the confusion. The software is free. The books are not.
I hear your frustration, but the price you paid was for resources, the books in your base package.
When you install an Alpha level software you turn yourself into a software tester. You're right, the Alpha is not ready to do much at all. I rely on my Windows installation, right now I can't invest much time in the Alpha.
You can use most of your new books in 1.2 just fine ( http://blog.logos.com/archives/2009/12/using_your_new_logos_4_resources_in_logos_3_or_logos_for_mac_1.html ), if the Mac version doesn't meet your needs I recommend shelving it and updating when it hits Beta, it'll will be a lot more usable then.
Which is why this Mac user is running Windows 7 in a Fusion VM just so I can have access to the L4 features, and still guide the Mac development to parity with the Windows product by providing feedback during their Alpha stage. If it isn't worth the price now, don't buy it. Come back in 6 - 8 months and look at it again.
Wow. Apparently I screwed up big-time. Thanks for quick reply. I have had logos for windows for years; bought logos 1.2 for mac early this year; and then BOUGHT the alpha upgrade on the website 2 days ago for another $127 + sales tax = $140. I thought it seemed odd to be paying for an alpha but I thought I was following the links per instructions. I was upgrading from scholar library for 1.2 mac to scholar''s library for logos4mac, and their was a charge required, or so it seemed.
Never fear, you didn't really "screw up". The $140 was the cost of the additional resources that are new to the Logos 4 Scholar's pack. You actual got a number of new books, etc. that weren't in the old V3 Scholar's pack. Logos has always given the engine away and somewhere on the website (admittedly not prominently displayed) is the link for the free engine. The catch, if it is one, is that there are a number of resources that are specifically designed for L4 and really make it shine (or will once the mac version is on par with the windows version). Those resources don't come with the free engine. So, don't feel bad. Of course, if that wasn't what you were looking for, a quick call to customer service will fix it all. They are always willing to refund, exchange, etc. They really are top-notch people over there.
I guess I should give customer service a call and try to explain what happened, but in the past I have found them frequently more confused than I am. I have been using Mac 1.2 so I will just stick to that for now. I'm still wishing for Bibleworks for Mac, but I guess I'll have to settle for Fusion. I finally began, after years of wavering, a committed move from Windows to Mac about 5 months ago, after 26 years (!) on PCs, and the road has been a little bumpy, as expected. Thanks for your help.
Ah, so the plot thickens. Okay, well I guess I will definitely give customer service a try. Thanks much for the clarification.

Before you request a refund (if that is your intention), you should consider one thing. The $140 you paid for the upgrade is an introductory rate. If you wait 6-8 months for the Mac version to reach parity with the Windows version, the price will likely be higher. If you keep L4 now, you can still use Mac 1.2 or even L4 for Windows. You can participate in the Alpha program and have the satisfaction of knowing that you have contributed to the development of the software.
FYI, the mac alpha shares the EXACT same code base as the windows version. This means that every feature in the L4windows is currently in L4mac. The developers are now building the interface for the tools already on our mac software. This means if you use L4windows, 1) you are learning how to use the l4mac. 2)all of your notes, layouts, and work in L4windows will move over to L4mac without any hassle.
I was hoping to stay off windows anything, so i can continue with mac 1.2 for now, but you point is well taken regarding the later upgrade price. Thanks.
Yea, I know the feeling. I just switched the heart rate monitor I use for exercise and one of the reasons was that the new one has native Mac software, now I am back to Windows to run my L4. But with Fusion and unity view, I can pretend that it really isn't Windows. [:$]
The thing is, while I used the Mac 1.2 version, it never really wowed me like the L4 Version has. Fact is, I just deleted it off of my hard drive this morning. But you have made the plunge, you have the expanded resources and the Mac L4 keeps catching up. Hang in there.
If you do run it on Windows, please do run it on Mac as well and give input on the development of the Mac version. The way they are doing the Mac version gives users a very rare and unique opportunity to participate in its development through bug reports, design suggestions, etc.
