Which iPad for preaching?

I currently preach from an iPad 2 band I am sure for an upgrade. I have considered switching to android but the quality the build is not there yet. So, I am choosing between the full size ipad and s I am used to the iPad 2, resolution is not the main issue for me. My main issue is the size; I like the size of the mini for holding while teaching but I am unsure whether the smaller screen will be a problem.

Has anyone preached with a mini? How did you find it?

If you're going to be holding it in your hands while preaching, then the mini would be the better choice. I'd suggest you go to an Apple store and handle one yourself before you buy though.

If you're not desperate to upgrade right now, I would sit tight as there's a lot of Internet chatter about both the iPad 5 and an iPad mini Retina display. There's a rumour the normal iPad will get a slimmed down form factor similar to the iPad mini, so it will be intereresting to see how much smaller it gets. That said, no one knows when they'll be released yet.

I have an iPad 3 and bought an iPad mini when they were released. I returned the iPad mini after a few weeks' use because the screen quality was inferior to the Retina display on the iPad 3. This was especially apparent when reading books, which I do a lot. (I knew the screen wasn't as good when I bought it, but I was hoping it would stand up better to to the Retina display than was the case.)

Refurb models from the Apple store represent great value and quality. As the release of the new models approaches, retailers will also discount the iPad 4 so you could pick up a bargain there.

I did get to hold it briefly at our local apple retailer here in Kenya. However, they don't like browsing here and kind of look at you like "so are you going to buy or are you wasting my time"? The weight was great but I am not sure whether I can fit enough on the screen at one time and still read it easily. I will take a look when in the UK in June.

I have never had retina and I have read that you notice more when you have had the retina experience.

Yes, I am aware that the new models are coming but rumour has it that this wont happen until the fourth quarter. I have a limited window as I only get one visit home a year, which is in June this year. I don't like trusting tech more than two years and I can't just go down the store when it fails.

I dont know about the UK, but in the States, the prices have been slashed for the third gen models in the past couple of weeks.

I have preached with both devices. I keep going back to the iPad over the mini, I can get more on screen with the larger iPad. If I am speaking with no pulpit or podium, I will use the mini. The iPad is also faster, so you have no delays which could cause a little of problem if you are switching between your notes and your bible on the ipad.

I use Pages on my Mac and save my work to iCloud, then open Pages on iPad and my sermon is there. I preach two services and many times I do a quick edit on my iPad between services on pages on my iPad. It is great for preaching

I meant the build quality of Android devices. I see Android as a better OS but the devices feel cheap and fragile. Regarding the Logos app, I am not sure what degree of parity there is and I have only used it on an iPad.

I will often preach without notes (though not always) and just use the Bible on the iPad. During our weekly teaching service, I always use notes as I do expository teaching through the Bible verse by verse. Right now, I save my notes as a PDF file and open in either Google Drive or more recently, Kindle. I used to use Goodreader but I found it a bit distracting. The other issue I have found is that African churches make very tall lecterns that cannot be adjusted and I am quite short. When invited as a preacher I am often forced to abandon the lectern and hold the ipad in my hand.

I am using the iPad mini for preaching. I find it works very well. I do enlarge the font, which helps somewhat. I hold it in portrait mode as that is more comfortable, but in landscape the font is larger and makes for easier reading.

I also put all my scripture references right in my notes (on my laptop), so I don't need to jump between Logos and Pages. It works very well for me, but I do realize more space would be nice. I love the size and weight of the mini.

i do this regularly.

i have my notes in a Notes document and, with the iPad in landscape mode, have a split screen with a Bible in one part and my notes in the other.

i find it works very well.

I use the iPad for the whole service and find it very efficient.

My style is to prepare the whole service in advance - stick it onto a PDF and then scroll through it using the standard 'Dropbox' rendering.

I have just switch to an iPad Air from the iPad 2 and it is getting its first live test tomorrow.
