OT-PC processors

Hi all.

I have searched the forums, and I may have missed it somewhere, but I can't find any specific information on processors.

My Laptop is failing, and I would like to purchase a new one, the Lord willing, soon. I have noticed good deals with "AMD Turion™X2 Dual-Core RM-74 (2.2GHz / 1MB)" and the like. My question is two-fold:

1) I've noticed that there are some on these forums that use AMD processors. Are you happy with their performance?

2) Is the above processor equivalant or comperable to the Core2 Duo by intel? If not, what are the disparities?

Dan I'm very happy with my AMD X2 3800+ It's getting a bit dated I guess which explains why I can't answer your second question. You'll have to look to PCWORLD or some other techy for that.

I can't answer specificaly your questions but can give a couple of pointers. The laptop market is dominated by Intel processors mainly because Intel is so much better at getting there processors down to a mobile configuration. They run a lot cooler because of this. Heat shortens the life of computer components.

I was able to get a new laptop just a few weeks ago. I have the HP Pavillion dv7-3085dx with the i7 processor (Four Cores) 6 Gigs memory. and Windows 7 64 bit. I can attest to the speed and the joy of using L4 on this machine. L4 does take advantage of all 4 cores with Windows 7 using Hyperthreading. Initial indexing of Scholars Silver was under 2 hours. I say this in an effort to encourage you to attempt to purchase the most horsepower you can on your processor. Hard drive and memory can be upgraded later to improve speed but most laptops the CPU is soldered onto the motherboard.

Another suggestion would be to keep a check on your local Best Buy or electronics store every day after Christmas for open box returns of laptops. Now days you usually have to ask the sales people what they have in back for open box on laptops. I goy a very good deal on a Toshiba Satellite a few years ago this way.

I hope that helps some. AMD processors are just as good as Intel in desktops just not quite as good thermally in laptops.

As has been stated, Intel builds the best mobile chips by far and they are worth the extra money. On the desktop things get a little more complicated. Over $200 dollars the Intel chips beat the AMD chips hands down. Below $200 the price/performance ratio tends to favor AMD. Tom's Hardware has great buying guides and reviews. The only other thing I'd add is that Logos will take advantage of all the hardware you can throw at it. This means that performance will degrade with less hardware. The more you can afford the more you'll like how L4 performs.

Also, besides CPU issues, consider a dedicated (not integrated) video card. Integrated video cards steal both RAM and CPU time. Logos4 is very intense graphically and CPU-wise. Look for at least 512MB dedicated video RAM.

(Note that regardless of hardware, some find L4 not performing up to expectations while others, with the same basic hardware configuration, find L4 performing marvelously. The reasons for this disparity are not fully understood.)

Just a theory but I wonder if that has anything to do with a clean install of Windows in whatever flavor. I only thought of this because L4 was one of the first things installed on a new laptop and I am one of the ones vastly enjoying the performance of Logos.

I have my suspicions that would lead me to agree with you. And one user reported significant improvement after doing a clean install of windows on the same machine.

This all got me to thinking about my journey through PC's and Logos.

In the early to mid 90s, I had a Packard Bell with window 3.11 and 500 mb of hardrive runing Logos1.6. It worked great on it. Then my wife upgraded my Logos to Logos 2.0. And that led to...

The funny thing is, my PC's just happen to need either replacement or upgrade at the same time that Logos upgrades to a new version!

Dear people at Logos, please, if you can, give me a heads up, about a year in advance, of when you plan on releasing Logos 5.0!

Well, through the majority of my computer experience, games have been the one pushing me to upgrade my hardware. I think that doing it for Logos is a much better investment.

I've got an Intel quad-core CPU @ 2.40GHz with 8GB RAM.

I'm pretty happy with L4's lickety-split speed, though even with my fast machine I'm noticing some things are extremely slow, such as opening a complex layout (e.g., Passage Guide, Exegetical Guide, Cited By, Info, English Bible, Greek Bible, Text Comparison, and a couple of lexicons).

UPDATE: I just realized you were asking about laptops, so my reply is probably irrelevant. Sorry. Mine's a desktop.
