Why are residents of California, New York, and Florida (and tiny Rhode Island) excluded form this contest? I believe three of the four most populous states are banned from teh contest by this exclusion. If it is a law(s), please tell us which law(s) so those of us who live in these states can campaign to get the unfavorable laws changed.

And while you are at it perhaps laws could be changed to allow potential winners from outside of the USA.

I have to wonder how many Moody products are/were in the Portfolio ...

Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

Bruce, you are my hero. Please Bob, Dan, it is worth the effort. Christianity is growing very fast outside North America. Think of Latin America, and the English user there, even though we are few in number.

There are some 3.6 million Adventist in Inter-America alone and the number is growing. http://www.adventistyearbook.org/default.aspx?page=ViewAdmField&AdmFieldID=IAD

I picked up 1,070 resources when I upgraded to Portfolio with L5, and none are from Moody. Of course this doesn't take into account what I may have had when I upgraded that was part of Portfolio.

With mention of an Advanced Resource Collection, Basic Resource Collection, and Beginner Resource Collection, I wonder if this means they will be rolling said collections out as purchasable (not on the website yet) for people who opt for the free engine plus resources they choose rather than a base package?

(This is not an "official" Logos answer; I just thought it was an interesting question.)

Generally, specific states are excluded because it's expensive or difficult to comply with those states' regulations regarding sweepstakes. Some Googling turned up the following relevant explanations (sorry, no specific laws cited):

Correctly complying with international law can be even more difficult or costly. Or it may not be possible to run the same contest in the US and a foreign country simultaneously. "In Canada, for example, the winner can not be chosen by luck, but rather some element of skill must be involved" (http://www.savingforsomeday.com/blog-law-is-your-giveaway-legal/).

Thanks Bradley. I am from Canada/  I actually knew that it was very complicated and that the rules differed greatly. I was more just "wishing" than I was "asking". We do live in a complicated world that I wish was much more simple.

Perhaps there are other ways to reward and motivate foreign Logos uses like special discounts that only apply to us. I know that you guys already do lots of great discounts so maybe this would not work but it does make us feel left out when we can't participate.

It takes a lot of skill to find some of the Logos give a ways.  Does that count?  [:@]

I'm pretty sure that from a legal point of view, your point is quite valid even if you intended it tongue-in-cheek. In that vein, what skill is involved in buying a lottery ticket? I also know that sweepstakes are everywhere and legal in Canada.

All you have to do it ask a skill testing question; i.e.: What are the first five books of the New Testament?

What are the first five books of the New Testament?

    The most current option:

    1. The Prayer of Thanksgiving
    2. The Gospel of Thomas
    3. The Gospel of Matthew
    4. The Gospel of Mark
    5. The Gospel of Luke <and continuing on>
    6. The Acts of the Apostles
    7. The First Book of the Odes of Solomon
    8. The Thunder: Perfect Mind
    9. The Gospel of John
    10. The Gospel of Mary

This version has circa 40 books. http://www.amazon.com/New-Testament-Combining-Traditional-Discovered/dp/0547792107/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1366738046&sr=1-1&keywords=the+new+new+testament#reader_0547792107

Peace!                                                     Along with your "droll sense of humour"!                  *smile*

      • From the Internet -- Droll Sense of Humour

It doesn't mean boring lol, I think droll means boring in French or something like that but a droll sense of humour is someone with a "dry" sense of humour (see yourhumourdictionary link).  A dry sense of humour someone who doesn't really tell a joke just makes like a witty observation about a situation (follow metafilter link)

        • Droll humor is an often dry, witty form of humor that elicits laughs through amusingly odd, sometimes zany behavior or speech. Due to its more subtle nature, this type of humor is not commonly used by comedians; Steven Wright is an example of one who does use it in combination with other techniques.
"Highbrow" comedy and British comedy are often classified as having droll humor.
Examples Popular comedians known for their droll humor include:
Emo Philips Houses make strange noises at night like creak, groan and "Emo, I'm going to kill you." ...So I remembered what my mother told me, "Whenever you feel afraid just whistle a happy tune" ... [whistling] ... then I felt a hand around my throat and a voice said, "Thanks. I thought I'd never find you in the dark."
Steven Wright There's a pizza place near where I live that sells only slices. In the back you can see a guy tossing a triangle in the air.
John Cleese (Monty Python). Known also for his physical comedy If God did not intend for us to eat animals, then why did he make them out of meat?
Mitch Hedberg I don't own a cell phone or a pager. I just hang around everyone I know, all the time. If someone needs to get a hold of me, they just say, "Mitch," and I say, "What?" and turn my head slightly.
Yes Minister The popular British political sitcom frequently used droll humour and pun-based comedy, with other characters responding with "oh, very droll."

        • Droll (I just looked it up) means amusingly odd or whimsically comical. So this someone has an amusing, odd, unusual, whimsical sense of humour.

drôle in French means funny, as in (a) amusing; (b) strange, weird, peculiar

Correctly complying with international law can be even more difficult or costly.

I don't doubt that, but what's interesting to me is that, at least according to my memory and impressions, Logos has gone through three stages during the 2,5 years I've followed you:

        1. For the first two years, all competitions were for 'residents of the 50 States', or something of that nature.
        2. Some months ago things changed radically, and I was, for the first time, allowed to enter a small number of competitions. I could do that because the rules had suddenly changed to "Non-US residents over the age of 18 may enter unless expressly prohibited by local regulations and law".
        3. Now it's changed again, even more radically, and suddenly not even all Americans can enter.

I definitely liked 2. best...[:)] Any way we can get back to that?

I liked #2 as well (even though I don't expect winning anyway). Maybe it's just the monetary value of the prize, I seem to recall that e.g. one of the US states requires sort of a licence for it if the prize is above $5000.

Since I don't expect winning, I'm content with Logos not having to defend against a 0800-WESUEFORU lawyer trying to pry money from potential neglect of state lottery law.

Have joy in the Lord! Smile
