is there a way to exclude a tag on a search?

Say I want to search all my library for the word "love" but I want to exclude all my Greek books or all my Hebrew books? I have all my resources tagged "Greek" "Hebrew" etc. but I don't see any way to exclude a given collection from a search.

Create a new collection that excludes your other collections (you can drag collections into the "minus these resources" box). To create collection of all your resources, use the rule rating:>=0.
An alternative would be rating:>=0 -mytag:greek -mytag:hebrew or whatever your tags were.
There's more on collections here: http://wiki.logos.com/Collections

Do collections differ from tagging?

Yes. Collections can be built from things like tags, author, subject, publisher, resource type, etc.

You can very quickly create two collections:
- A collection which includes all resources with the tag you want excluded from your search.
- A collection with ALL resources MINUS the resources in the first collection.
This can take about 60 seconds to create once you know how.

So I am curious....what is "best practices" then for using tags as opposed to collections? collections seem much easier to make than going thru one's entire library and tagging each book. ?

You will find people on both sides of the fence on that one. I use both. I am especially keen to tag my Vyrso books… and any collections can be dynamic. For example, if I have a collection of books tagged "discipleship," any future books I add to my collection which I tag will be added automatically.

Use a controlled vocabulary for tagging; forum reply has an example doc => http://community.logos.com/forums/p/29268/225625.aspx#225625 with follow-up discussion.
Every tag is a collection. Easy to add tag(s) to resource(s); challenging to change tag(s) so please vote => http://logos.uservoice.com/forums/42823-logos-bible-software-5/suggestions/564609-provide-management-of-mytags Logos 5.1 Beta library book cover view shows resource type and mytag(s).
Wiki has => http://wiki.logos.com/Example_Collections with dynamic rule examples for a variety of collections. If would like more collection rule(s), please describe what would like.

I used to build up very complicated collection rules, but I've stopped doing that now, and do more tagging instead. Rules are great for clearly defined collections like Books from Martyn Lloyd Jones, or Journals, or English Bibles, or so on. Collections based on tags are better for occasions where there's a degree of personal choice involved, such as Expository Commentaries. That said, I still use quite complex rules for creating collections for individual books of the Bible.
The best practice is to get into the habit of creating collections whenever they'd be useful. As said earlier, it doesn't take too long at all.
