Is there a way to close all windows at once?

If I have windows open, and then click Home, and then click the Search icon, my previously opened windows reopen along with the Search window. I want my students to be able to start a series of instructions with a clean slate.

Close all in the command line. You can also drag this to the toolbar as a short cut.

As Terry said, "CLOSE ALL" in the commandbox will do that. You can also drag that command to the shortcut bar to make an icon for quick access.

If I have windows open, and then click Home

That only expands the home screen, as you discovered it doesn't close anything. You can switch back and forth each time you click on the home icon.

I prefer the command box to shortcut icons when possible, but I didn't like typing in "close all" every time. So I made a blank layout called ca. Now all I have to do is hit ALT+D ca and it closes everything.
