Use of concordance and lexicon - same Greek root word different English translations

Hi there

Would someone advise on this please?

I use the NASB.  Say I look up the word "hope" as used in Rom. 12:12 in the NASB Updated Edition Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible.  It shows the Strongs number 1680.  I can also see other instances of 1680 here but only when as translated as "hope".

I click on "1680" and "Jump to reference" and get to my Concise Dictionary of the Words in the Greek Testament and the Hebrew Bible.  There I find the Greek word elpis as well as a brief explanation of the meaning.  It also tells me that this is from a primary word elpo.

My questions are -

How do I look up the word elpo if I don't have the Strongs number for it?

How do I find out what other English words either elpo or elpis may have been translated into in the NASB?

Am I not using the software correctly or is it because I need a better dictionary...?

Appreciate any help, cheers.

Hi June! Welcome to the forums. [:)]

My first question to you is what base package do you own, if any? Typically it would be much quicker to do a Bible Word Study, but if you don't own a base package or the right data sets, you won't be able to do that.

    Thanks :)

Ahhh OK I'm not sure I even have a package.  I just downloaded the software and purchased the Concordance.  But I am hoping to be able to use Logos as comprehensively as if I would use a desk Concordance and Lexicon (but without the bulk).  What would you suggest for me then?

And...not sure if this Logos forum is the right place to ask this question...but have you used Olive Tree and would you say that or Logos is better?  Before I invest too much and get locked in to one system.

    Welcome [:D]

In Logos 5, can right click on an English word in NASB 95 Update, click Lemma, then click Bible Word Study:

Noticed ἐλπίς occurs 53 times in the Reverse Interlinear for NASB 95 Update and 54 times in my preferred English Bible.

For visual filter highlighting, wiki has => http://wiki.logos.com/Extended_Tips_for_Highlighting_and_Visual_Filters#Examples_of_visual_filters

After several upgrades, now have Logos 5 Portfolio base package.  Logos has two English base package comparison pages => http://www.logos.com/comparison and => http://www.logos.com/catholic#compare

With Logos search capabilities, personally not need a concordance.  Thankful for Logos 30 day return policy.

Logos 5 Gold and above along with Verbum Master and above include my favorite commentary series; wiki has resource reviews => http://wiki.logos.com/Resource$3a_UBS_New_Testament_Handbook_Series and => http://wiki.logos.com/Resource$3a_UBS_Old_Testament_Handbook_Series

Logos visual filter highlighting can combine hundreds of search results for simultaneous display; have not seen this capability in any other software.

Caution: Logos has potential for wallet to cry lots [:'(] because more resources are available for purchase.

Best price per resource is a large bundle purchase.  Thankful for Logos payment plan option, which has a monthly processing fee, but no interest on outstanding balance.  Logos has a variety of sales every year.  Thankful can purchase a resource license once for use on many personal devices.

Thankful for 406 free Vyrso ebooks (includes 10 samplers), which are usable in Logos 5.  Wiki has => http://wiki.logos.com/Free_Logos_Books

OK clear, I realize my mistake was in approaching Logos as a "traditional" resource i.e. I buy a bible, I buy a concordance, I buy a lexicon...and do things the physical desktop way :)

I will have a better look at the packages and decide what is best for me.

Thanks very much for both your help!

Are you using Logos 5 because I don't see an option "jump to reference", which sounds morel like Libronix/Logos 3?

elpo doesn't appear as a bible word, which would explain that. Other words with "From" do have a Strong's number as applicable.

In Logos 5, right click the word in your NASB95 bible and you will get the option to "Search this resource" on the left if you first select "Lemma" on the right (the one with elpis).

You're right, I have Logos 5 on my desktop Mac but it's only Logos 3 on my iPad app...but there doesn't seem to be an option to upgrade?

Thanks for the clarification on other words with "From" also having a Strongs number, glad to know!

And thanks for explanation on how to search other translated words.

Logos can quickly search for words NEAR each other in a variety of Bible translations:

Physical desktop method for finding verses that have rejoice near hope takes a bit longer.

Since the Logos mobile app on an iPad cannot do visual filter highlighting, personally have a Windows 7 tablet.  Caveat: tablet is a bit sluggish to use plus battery life is significantly less than an iPad.  MacBook Air can run Logos 5 with visual filter highlighting, but is a bit more bulky than an iPad.

Ok, the iPad app from Logos isn't called "Logos 3" but it is fundamentally different to the desktop Logos 5 and it can't be upgraded to provide the same functionality. So please base further questions here on how you want to use Logos 5 whilst there is an iPhone/iPad forum where you can ask questions related to that Logos app.

    Clear, thanks.

Actually I'm also using the desktop Logos 5 version and answers for that have been really helpful.  I will go to the iPad forum for any other specific questions on that only.
