Words Are Beautiful and Interesting

I have to admit that I am a little disappointed. I have recollections as a very young teenager, going to the library as a freshman in High School. I was amazed at all the books in what seemed to be a very large room with a very small second floor loft in the back. In addition to all the individual volumes I also appreciated the dictionaries of various sorts and encyclopedias from several different publishers. For some reason I was attracted to lots of information in bite-sized chunks. ...still has an appeal for me today. That was a long time ago.
I would have worked a whole summer and then some, overtime, to have a resource like The Century Dictionary. Not possible back then.
Maybe there are others out there who feel the same. How about $50?

I would encourage support for this CP offering. It isn't a substitute for the OED since it is somewhat older, but this may be as close as we get to it.

I'm in for $100. I encourage others to bid for this, maybe half as much. I know $50 is a lot for a dictionary, but what a dictionary it is! Yes, we will probably never get the OED, but that's probably the closest comparison to the value of this dictionary. The CD-ROM version of that will set you back about $200.
Here's my plug from a while back for why you should bid on this: http://community.logos.com/forums/p/26356/194390.aspx. The only thing I'd change about it is bid at least $50. It won't go into production if people bid much less than that, because it's got to be enormously expensive to produce.

And you'd have to dig up the CD-ROM and reinstall it each time you upgraded to a new machine. And it might not run on future versions of Windows (Vista was current at the time it was released). And you won't have access to it from your portable devices. And on and on. So many reasons why the Logos version of Century Dictionary will be much better, even if it doesn't have neologisms like Internet in it.
And guess what! You can't even order the OED CD-ROM from OUP anymore. I think it's obsolete already. See http://public.oed.com/about/the-oed-in-print-and-on-cd-rom/buy-the-oed-on-cd-rom/ and try to click on the Order Online link. Ha ha!

Unless a new English dictionary has words such as "LOL","Google" or "supercomputing", I won't consider purchasing it. If the dictionary has extensive etymologies, however, I would consider it. [:)]

If you note the product page, it says "Edited by Sanskrit scholar and linguist William Dwight Whitney …" This doesn't necessarily mean there are extensive etymologies in the work, I would be surprised if there aren't. Note that in his A Greek Grammar in the Light of Historical Research AT Robertson frequently mentions the Sanskrit background.

I replied to Rosie's thread in order to bring it back to the top since its title is more likely to help people know what the thread is about, and hopefully to spark interest. That is not to reflect negatively on the title of this thread. I linked that thread to this one in my post. I am in at $50.

I've bumped mine up from $50 to $100. Hoping it goes for/under $80, though.
I would also love to have the OED in Logos. I've got the much smaller 2 vol SOED on my shelf and have always dreamed of having the complete OED.

I used to have a 2 vol OED which came with a microscope magnifying glass to read. Quite a work.

Ha. I remember that. Although I seem to remember a version of it as a single oversized volume. I tried it out in the bookstore for a bit (Oxford Books, Atlanta, one of the few places to carry works like that, which has long since closed[:'(]), but it was like trying to read microfiche without the reader. That's too much work for me.. I'm lazy!

Here is an online site that has the ability to look up a word and return the page from the dictionary. If you don't have or don't want the plugin, you can view it as a jpeg file.

I still have mine! I keep it in the living room as a conversation piece, but come to think of it, nobody has ever engaged me in conversation about it!
Working in a library, I'm lucky to have access to oed.com

I grew up with one of those in the house. My mother got it as the enticement for joining Book-of-the-Month Club. I was able to find a used copy of it years later and now own it too, though I haven't referred to it in years, because I have online access to the OED through my educational institution.

How about getting this into Logos?
The Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology
The dictionary entries could be linked to Latin, Greek, and Hebrew resources in your library.

Great idea. You need to post that over in the Suggestions forum or it won't get picked up by Logos as a resource suggestion.

Unfortunately, the increased $50 bids don't seem to be having much effect. We need more suckers, umm, bidders.

How can I not join you? I must! Indeed! Just raised mine to $50 and also might go higher later if necessary!
My old bid of $30 goes back to 2011 - September - however, I see a "jump" in the diagram and am encouraged ....

Using the subjunctive in English, George! (Very rare indeed!)
Were you to spell the word humor properly -- humour! -- your e-mail would be far more graciously received by me! *smile*
Blessings, George!

It is worth checking if your local public library has access to the Oxford English Dictionary. Many do. I can log in to oed.com via my county library's website. It's free.
The website is continually updated. Although it would convenient to have in Logos, you wouldn't have the latest version.

True, but how often do we need "the latest version"? Every 5-10 years should be sufficient.
