Logos and netbooks

After downloading 53000 messages from a newsgroup and finding a reference to this forum I am very happy to be here!

I have recently purchased the Logos Bible Study Software 3. I would like it to be "mobile". I am hoping that a "netbook" would be the simplest and least expensive method to accomplish this.

My main computer is a high-powered notebook. I just purchased an Acer Aspire One with Windows XP, 1 Gig RAM and 120 GB hard drive. I loaded Logos up on it, all 1773 resources. It runs fine. As a college professor, I just might take my netbook with me to class now.

The only limitations would be the RAM and processor speed, but you should find that the netbook will work for you.

I have the same netbook as the Professor, with almost double the resources. I've found that this machine works excellent with Logos. The only time that I noticed where processor speed and memory size shows it's limits is during a search of my entire library. It accomplishes the goal but takes some time.

The only real cavet with the machine I found is battery life. But this can be solved with a 6 or 9 cell battery. Or the route I took, an external laptop battery that provides a full day of power.

Interesting to know! Just curious. Has anyone tested Logos: mac on the MacBook Air, or on Parallels or Fusion on the Air, to see how well it perfoms? Especially with these newer models, it'd probably perform quite well.

For specifics then, do you share files/network/sync the netbook with your main computer? And how so? I don't really want to spend the extra money on an external hard drive for the netbook since I have jump sticks, a desktop, and a large extra hard drive for backup/storage.

I guess what I'm really asking is the best way to get the software and resources on to the the netbook.

My Acer AspireOnce netbook comes with built-in wireless networking. This allows me to pickup new resources while I am travelling and also allows me to sync resources with my desktop at home. You also have the option to sync licences via the Logos server and download resouces for which you have licences from their ftp server, although transfers via a home network are often a lot faster than finding and downloading resources from the ftp server. CD packages have more on them than just the book files, but these can be installed via the "update" file on the CD. You can either use an external USB CD drive for the netbook, assign a networked desktop CD drive a local drive letter on your netbook, or copy the CD files to an SD card or USB stick to get the files to the netbook, depending on what hardware you have.

Hi Meric,

I agree with David, I have my Acer on my wireless network at home, and have file and print sharing set up on it. I've mapped the DVD on the destop machine to a drive letter on my Acer, and running Logos install disks is as transparent as having the drive built into the netbook. For backups I can just back up the netbook to a directory on a shared folder on my desktop, and then everything is backed up to my external hard drive on the the desktop, and to an internet backup site. Also if you add your mapped DVD/CD drive to your Libronix resource paths, you'll then be abe to use "Location Manager" to copy all the resources from your network drive to youe Acer.

As far as syncing the two machines (annotations, favorites, etc.), David Hooton has posted a Libronix Backup and Restore script, in the files section of the news groups, that automates the process. I quote:

"These command scripts enable you to easily backup and restore all the data, settings and resources in your Libronix installation on Windows XP/2000, Vista and Windows 7."

Just do a search for "Libronix Backup and Restore (Interactive)", and you'll find his latest version.

I use Logos on a Samsung NC10 netbook. I upgraded the RAM to 2GB, and I have no problem running logos on it.

I use Windows Live Sync to keep files/folders synced between my desktop and netbook, and I have been pleased with the results.

LIve sync doesn't have a remote accessing feature but live mesh does. I use live mesh. It has a limit to how many files you can sync to the cloud with the desktop feature but if you don't sync a folder with the desktop in the cloud it has no limit. So you could sync your library of logos books without worry about the limit. I sync my logos folder in the My Docs folder using it so I can have all my documents on all three of my computers.

I don't like storing my files in the clouds, and wouldn't do so for Libronix (my computers are on a LAN), but I have found a cloud facility for bookmarks as it works better than the clunky features provided by Firefox (it's called XMarks).

I believe Live Sync does allow remote access, but the host computer must be online. Live Sync doesn't store files "in the cloud", it just provides a connection between the two (or more) computers. The remote access feature is an option that you must select for each device on the sync network.

Sounds really interesting. I'll have to check it out. I was trying out the Mesh betas, but I had issues with them so I ditched it. Maybe by now the issues are ironed out.

One issue though. Can't sync my PowerBook. The Mesh software is Intel only. Oh well, that wouldn't be too much of an issue.

Since Logos seems to allow 2 installs/license, I am very much looking at this as a way to have mobile Bibleage. Quickly look up verses, use my preferred translation instead of listening to the Eugene Peterson paraphrase when it appears...

If I understand you correctly, Kevin, you don't have to worry about size limits so long as you're only syncing and not storing in MS's cloud. That means, however, that in order for syncing to work outside of that 5GB desktop, both machines have to be running and connected to the internet at the same time, right?

I have the same thing. Followed the insructions on Logos website for downloading new install. Copied all of my resource files to an external HD, then imported to the netbook. I picked the EeePC for cost and the external monitor jack. At home I use external monitor and USB keyboard/mouse. This little machine is now my dedicated research device (and it is quick enough to stream Netflix wirelessly).

To explain, Fred, Live Mesh syncs between computers and online storage (the cloud). You get a certain amount of online storage and the default is to sync online. But if you want you can set up folders to sync only from computer to computer. If you do this there is no limit as to how much you can sync. The only limitation with Mesh is if you sync with the online storage which Mesh calls the "desktop".

I have been running Logos on my eee 1000h for almost a year now and it runs very well. The difficulties I've noticed during this time include:

Bad dual monitor support
Clunky/big interface that takes up too much of my limited screen real estate
It is difficult to navigate through a resource using the touchscreen
No usable full screen mode
SD cards are available from Logos in 4gb maximum size, which does not include everything the DVD includes (why not make 8gb SD cards available with everything the DVD includes?)

I have a thread in the suggestions forum about the features I would like to see in Logos 4.0 (when will this come out BTW?) specifically relating to my experience with my touchscreen eee 1000h.

Beth, I am not a computer geek, but what I do know is that the more RAM the better. I don't know what the max is for netbooks but I would move in that direction if I was about to get a net book and wanted to run Logos and other app's with it at the same time. Hope this helps.

I am also using an Acer Aspire One and have about 2500 resources. The program runs fine on the netbook.

I just purchased an Eec pc 1015 PEM netbook and saw your posting on the Logos website. I have Logos 4 on my laptop that I want to install onto my new netbook, but am afraid it won't work because of the software's enormous size. Which version of Logos to you have on your netbook?

Also, are you running Windows 7 Starter, Windows 7, or XP on your netbook? Also, are you running Office 2007 or 2010 on your netbook?
