Field Searching with IVP OT Dictionaries

After reading the blog post on searching fields this week, I attempted a basic search of Heading, Large Text and Title on my entire library for the following: "Ten Commandments OR Decalogue."

The search seemed to work well with hits in several of my Bible Dictionaries. However, the search yielded no hits/references in my IVP Dictionary of the Old Testament - Pentateuch. I checked the DOTP and, indeed, there are articles on "Decalogue" as well as an article title of "Ten Commandments" which simply refers you to the article on the Decalogue. Yet, neither of these articles came up on my search.

Any explanation? Any way I should alter my search?

The answer is that those dictionaries are indexed by Headwords not Large Text, Heading, or Title. So in your search add Headwords and you should see them.

To find out what is indexed in a resource, open it and go to the information page (the little "i" in the circle) and look for Indexes.

This is very helpful information. I did attempt to add the field Headwords or English Headwords to my search. However, neither came up as an option under Search Fields.

I will try to search the Logos Forum under headwords to find a way to conduct the search. If you or someone else knows a workaround, I'd love to know what it is.

I did a number of basic searches using Heading Text, Large Text and Title as the Field screen. Interestingly, I was able to generate articles from all of the other IVP "Black" Dictionaries -- INCLUDING the IVP OT Dictionary on Historical Books.

Strangely, it seems as if the IVP OT Dictionary on the Pentateuch is immune to Logos Field Searches. ???

Try a Basic search of Entire Library and you will get a Topic section with results in DOTP because it has topics maintained in the Logos Controlled Vocabulary (LCV) database which you should have if you own a Logos 5 or Logos 4 base package (or library). This is the way Logos has been directing searches for articles or topics since Logos 4 was released and it overcomes some of the basic issues of how individual resources are tagged i.e. with/without Heading text, Titles or Large Text (an interim measure adopted by Logos and created during indexing of the resource).

DOTH (Historical books) has a heading for Decalogue but it refers to an article on Ethics, which was deemed not to be a suitable article for the topic as there is no hit in the LCV! But if you search for Ethics you will get a Topic hit in DOTP and DOTH.

You should get the same results in your Topic Guide which presents the results a little differently, but it is based on the LCV.

That sounds like a formatting error to me -- especially if it's only one volume in the series.

Thank you for the responses.

I was able to bring up articles using the Basic search of my entire library as Dave suggested. Doing this yielded the article under the Topic section.

However, I agree with fgh that there does appear to be a formatting glitch. Since all the other dictionaries in the series yield results when searching Heading Text, Large Text and Title, I believe the DOTP is meant to as well.

Can this be fixed for the DOTP? And I see significant benefits of the field search over and above what can be found in a basic search of topics. From the forums, it seems clear that many Logos users heavily use the IVP Dictionaries.

While the dictionary is supposed to be indexed by English headword it seems it is not.

It has headword milestones for lookup purposes but the article titles are not formatted (text size) for Logos to recognise them as Large
Text search fields.
