Help distinguishing between Anthologies of ANE Texts?!?

I have been going back and working through some texts on Ancient Near Eastern history, and I am looking to fill in some primary sources, but I am having a hard time distinguishing between the different translations/editions.

I already have the following:

Ancient Near Eastern Texts by James Pritchard

The Context of Scripture (3 vols.) by William W. Hallo

Ugaritic Narrative Poetry by Simon Parker

Prophets and Prophecy in the Ancient Near East

I am looking to complete the Writings From the Ancient World (16 vols.) collection.

But what about the following:

Religious Texts from Ugarit, 2nd ed. by Nicolas Wyatt

Does anyone know how much more is added over the volumes in the above collections?

Hammurabi's Laws: Text, Translation and Glossary by M. E. J. Richardson

This is a large volume, so I figure the laws are not collected in any of the above volumes?

Canaanite Myths and Legends

At just over 200 pgs., I can't imaging this adds anything over those above?

If I end up getting more of these, I may put my OCD to good use and do a PBB index of all of the texts.

I am not a specialist, and have not spent enough time comparing what is in all of these volumes, and in fact do not have the "Writings From the Ancient World" collection. So take my free, amateur summary for what you paid for it - namely nothing, if you want...

Pritchard's ANET was the standard collection of sources for over a generation when I was in school, and so is referenced in countless commentaries, etc. As my Old Testament prof said, if you wanted to know more than what an introductory textbook says about the world surrounding the Old Testament, start with reading ANET. My primary interests were (and are) elsewhere and so did not get this when I was in school (got the 2 paperback "selections from" instead.) But when it came through as a pre-pub, I grabbed it, because I recognized that this is a classic collection of sources and was well worth the introductory price.

I understand that at least to some extent this work has now been superseded by Hallo's COS, which I was glad was in my Libronix 3 Original Languages Library. So this is where I go first when looking for background stuff for the Old Testament.

I grabbed the three volumes you asked about at the end, and PROBABLY I do not have the background and interest to use them properly. I would probably never page through them myself, or read extended sections of them, since Hallo generally gives enough for me. I recognize that experts would find them quite useful, but that is not where I spend my time.

But they do sometimes show up in searches. You have to ask yourself how much you are interested in this aspect of biblical background, and what this would be worth to you.

I too would be helpful if you ended up doing it. Personally I have all the texts you have except the Pritchard texts plus I have the Religious Texts from Ugarit. I have not done a detailed comparison so it is difficult to give a good answer to your question. It is also not an expertise of mine by any stretch of the imagination. If you have a specific questions about Religious Texts from Ugarit I don't mind doing some research.

I think it might be a near impossible task since the translations are all slightly different, and some of the spelling for major characters is different, making searches hard. I also want to add Before the Muses and The Harps That Once... in the index as non-Logos supported editions. I was going to get the Writings from the Ancient World set, but they were only going to give me $20 for volumes that I already own, so that isn't going to work.

As Ken McGuire commented, I'd expect most commonly referred to sources would be covered between ANET and COS. There is also the Ugaritic Library (here: http://www.logos.com/product/5765/ugaritic-library) which has the texts of the Ugaritic Databank (basically, everything Ugaritic) but I don't believe all of the databank material is translated (but I could be wrong).

But what about the following:

This is also in the Ugaritic Library. I believe the sample scans on the Logos page do have the TOC.

These last two are both in the Origins of Ancient Isaelite Religion Collection (here: http://www.logos.com/product/5783/origins-of-ancient-israelite-religion-collection ) On Hammurabi, if I read the preface/description correctly, the edition by Richardson contains the prologue and epilogue to the laws [edit] as well as the laws themselves[end edit]. Further, I'd guess the textual and translation notes to be a bit more extensive in this volume than, say, the portions of the law covered by ANET and COS.

On the Canaanite Myths material, I do not know much. They are in transliteration and translation, with notes. Again, I'd guess the notes in an edition like this are more extensive than notes would be in a compilation volume such as ANET or COS, but that is a guess on my part.

I own Prophets and Prophecy in the Ancient Near East and Ugaritic Narrative Poetry, which add up to about $43.00, so I guess $20 is not too bad, but I had hoped for more. I was thinking Ugaritic Narrative Poetry was more expensive.

I was compelled to purchase the Writings from the Ancient World set, as well as the Origins of Ancient Israelite Religion Collection (Rick was right, this is a great deal), and Religious Texts from Ugarit.

I browsed through Dictionary of Deities and Demons and checked the hyperlinks for Ugaritic texts, and even though many of them are covered by Ugaritic Narrative Poetry, which I already owned, there were others that came up in Religious texts from Ugarit and Religion and Cult at Ugarit. So there are obviously a wide number of texts spread across many volumes (just in texts from Ugarit).

This thing has ANE articles out the ya-ya. Strongly, strongly (did I say "strongly"?) suggest this resource. Fascinating stuff on every page. [Y]

I also encourage anyone who has placed a bid on HERE to make sure that it is in the above mentioned price range. Bob has stated that increasing bids on this resource is required to get it over the top. The reason is because this thing is LOADED with original language fonts. If I remember correctly, I think it even has Egyptian hieroglyphs! GET THIS RESOURCE!!!

Luckily, I got the Lichtheim volumes in Gold.

The Magnes Press set is very interesting, but I would imagine that the volume on Anath from Ugarit is probably in the other volumes, even though those don't have Cassuto's notes. I just can't afford that set.

The 2 volumes on the Ugarit Baal Cycle must be made of gold for $299.

I would love to get the set of Semitic Inscriptions sometime soon.

I would love to get the set of Semitic Inscriptions sometime soon.

I got that with the Hebrew Bundle, L (280 vols.). I already happened to own everything else in it, so I got the inscriptions for $11,26 instead of $179.95.[:)] Not sure I'll ever find much use for them, but for that price I figured it was worth it just to have access to them. They could do with an update, though. It only took me seconds to find the first bunch of typos.

I presume you already have the free Duke Databank of Documentary Papyri (256 vols.)?

Vincent, the Inscriptions page is missing the 'Also included in' section that would tell people to take a look at the Hebrew bundle before they buy.[;)]
