With the recent passing of my mother into glory it has caused me to reflect on a number of Scriptures about the brevity of life. It is quite sobering to grasp just how short life is but a reminder that life is a gift to be lived to the full.
After a while I came up with the following -
- 2 Samuel 14:14 - water spilled on the ground
- 1 Chronicles 29:15, Psalm 144:4 - a shadow
- Job 7:6-7- the wind
- Job 9:25-26- Like a swift messenger, a swift ship, or a swooping eagle
- Job 14:1- a flower
- Psalm 103:15-16 - grass
- Psalm 78:39 - wind
- Psalm 90:9- a sigh
- Psalm 144:4 Job 6:7 - a breath
- James 4:14 - vapor
I thought about how to best do a search for this but ended up putting this list together by bits and pieces. Can anyone suggest the best way to do this type of search in Logos since it has so many facets? Also, I'd be interested if others wish to add to this list. I know that there are other Scripture that use the same comparison but can you find other metaphors or similes?
As the old saying goes "Only one life, twill soon be past. Only what's done for Christ will last"? By the way, does anyone know who originally wrote this?
