Best of the old commentary sets?

I am curious as to what others think as to which they find are the most helpful of the old commentary sets (pre-1930) that have come through CP in recent years. I have most of them, but beyond Barnes and Matthew Henry, I'm not too familiar with with the authors and the approach or intent of each set (I bought them because they were on CP!) I'm mostly attracted to an application or pastoral approach to commentaries at this time.

I would load up a screen shot list of what I'm talking about, but can't seem to do it at them moment. I use type:comm AND pubdate:<1930 to find these.

I don't think all these went through CP but rather started in prepub , but for me personally, Alford, Expositor's Greek Testament, Cambridge Greek Testament for Schools & Colleges, Robertson's Word Pictures, Classic Commentaries on the Greek New Testament & Keil and Delitzsch.

Agree with all of these. I'd add the original Expositor's Bible. Calvin's Commentaries need no extra endorsement.

Thanks Justin and Mark. I do have all of these. And the Alford recommendation helped me discover Spurgeon's "Lectures to My Students, Vol.4," in my library, where Spurgeon comments on and recommends commentaries from his day. Very interesting!

Gentlemen, if you want something full of marrow and fatness, cheering to your own hearts by way of comment, and likely to help you in giving to your hearers rich expositions, buy DR. HAWKER’S POOR MAN’S COMMENTARY.† Dr. Hawker was the very least of commentators in the matter of criticism; he had no critical capacity, and no ability whatever as an interpreter of the letter; but he sees Jesus, and that is a sacred gift which is most precious whether the owner be a critic or no. It is to be confessed that he occasionally sees Jesus where Jesus is not legitimately to be seen. He allows his reason to be mastered by his affections, which, vice as it is, is not the worst fault in the world. There is always such a savor of the Lord Jesus Christ in Dr. Hawker that you cannot read him without profit. He has the peculiar idea that Christ is in every Psalm, and this often leads him totally astray, because he attributes expressions to the Saviour which really shock the holy mind to imagine our Lord’s using. However, not as a substantial dish, but as a condiment, place the Plymouth vicar’s work on the table. His writing is all sugar, and you will know how to use it, not devouring it in lumps, but using it to flavor other things.

The older set I have used most and found quite helpful is Lange (Lange's Commentary on the Holy Scriptures (63 vols.)).. The volume covering the Apocrypha is not to the same calibre as the rest of the series, but is a fine little technical work on it. I must admit to knowing little about The Speaker's Commentary (13 vols.) which is still under community pricing but from the research i have been able to do on it I am very much looking forward to it and thing it will likely deserve a place in this list with Lange and Poor Man's….
