Best commentaries on the book of James.

I'm coming from a Southern Baptist (and soteriologically reformed) point of view.
Just wondering what you would recommend as being the most useful commentaries on the book of James. For someone of my background.
They don't all have to be from my POV, authors from competing views often ask interesting questions etc.
OH. As to commentary type - looking for something expository as they will be used for sermon prep. But I can handle technical, or other types as well.
Thanks in advance.

Based on your qualifications, I'd put Doriani's Reformed Expository Commentary on James at the top of the list. The set is on pre-order now-

I've ordered my set. I own about half of them in hardcopy, and like all of them. I'm guessing on the ones I don't have, but based on authorship, I have little doubt I'll be disappointed.
Here are a few others I have in Logos that I recommend:

The John MacArthur volume, which is from Moody so is not currently available.

Thomas Manton, hands down!

I think I have Moo on James (NICNT If I remember right Pillar New Testament Commentary) on my Kindle. Bible Speaks today and Preaching the word are already in my library, so I'm going to go ahead and order the Baker title!
Also I jumped in on Doriani's. Nice find!
Thanks Doc B.Evan Boardman said:Thomas Manton, hands down!

I was going to suggest that!

This one cost more, but is fuller than the Crossway. http://www.logos.com/product/29978/a-practical-commentary-or-an-exposition-with-notes-on-the-epistle-of-james

Douglas Moo in the Pillar Commentary series is hard to beat on James - at least in my opinion.

Denver Seminary gives top ranking to the ZECNT edition by Blomberg/Kamell for more technical commentaries (ahead of both BECNT/McCartney and NIGTC/Davids). http://www.logos.com/product/17267/zondervan-exegetical-commentary-on-the-new-testament-james
For mid-level commentaries, they give top ranking to PNTC/Moo (already suggested above) and NICNT/McKnight.
I own all the above, and am finding that I really like the format of the ZECNT commentaries. While they are technical, they do contain a "Theology in Application" for each pericope which would be useful for sermon preparation.0 -

Thanks everyone!
That looks like a good addition as well Bob - if two of the author of two of the other highly recommended commentaries recommend it, it can't be half bad.

Working through James myself, using more than a dozen commentaries. The most useful to me are Moo—Pillar and Tyndale, Varner—EEC, Lenski, Davids NIGTC, and McKnight—NICNT.
If you want a really contrary view, you might also consult Zane Hodges, but I often find his logic to be illogical [:D]

I'm picking up a copy of that one today. I had somehow missed it.

I picked up Manton when I bought Bob's recommendation as well. I'm sure Bob already gets a commission, but maybe you should ask for one, too. :-)
