Tagging Theological Journal Library

I need help. I desire to tag each volume of the TLJ individually. I have all 15 volumes of the TJL and would like to partition each instance of the journals into there respective individual volumes.

The problem is I previously lumped the journals into a single collection and now I judge it to be too general and unwieldy for my present taste. I can't figure out a way of identifying each volume separately so that I can tag them into their respective volumes. This will allow me to tag each volume with a new tag, e.g. TLJvol15.

Can anyone suggest a way of identifying each successive volume so that I may rework my tags?

Hi Lynden,

Excellent questions. The answer to your first question is: I have the journals tagged into one catch all collection I have named My Theological Journals Collection. This is a good start, but, for some queries/topics it brings back too many hits. This leads to your second question.

Second, I am searching for a solution that is at the same time both general and in some ways specific. If a resource or my interests turn to a specific journal or topic I want to research, I judge that having my TLJs tagged by volume number will allow me to whittle the topic down to separate a year or years i.e. volumes. That way I will be able to bring back fewer hits organized by a spread of years and/or volumes.

I may be wrong about this, but, I will never know until I give it a go. Do you have an opinion? I'd love to hear it.

First, I'm going to rephrase your question to see if I understand it. You want Logos library or collection to list all of a specific journals e.g. Grace Journal to include (1960-2001). Right?

If so this is exactly what I am most interested in achieving. Unfortunately it is not working as I conceived. Well back to the drawing board. Thanks for pointing out the rumple in my freshly pressed suit. Any help with this would be much welcome. I'm going to keep on plugging along.

To cover the 1990 - 1999 try this: type:journal pubdate:1990, 199

It is important to leave off the last digit. It does pick up all the journals.

Once I tag all the Theological Journal Library journals into their respective volumes, if I create collections for each volume e. g. volume 1-5, will this call up all of the titles in the volumes?

This is one of my goal features. I want to reproduce the collections as found in the .pdf I referenced, see link in 2nd post of this thread. I thought I could avoid making collections, however, it appears that this is not possible. Any ideas regarding this?

If you know the volume, then tag them by volume and create a collection using that criteria.

It might be easier to sort by Electronic publication date, then tag them by volume, since you already have this information outlined in the document.

Sorry for the interruption. Dinner. Maybe an example will better serve. Say I wanted to find articles in which Metzger is mentioned in the Journal of Grace Evangelical Society. With my newly formulated level of tagging I can run a search on mytag:JGES and the query quickly returns 8 results in 5 articles. This pleases me greatly.

The next challenge is to request search find Metzger as author in Theological Journal Library. By this experience I find I need to add another tag that identifies the lot of these journals. I choose the tag TJL.

Finally, addressing your suggestion. If I wanted to build a collection to sort by epub date and query that collection to find articles in Theological Journal Library that Metzger authored in 1946-1997 then according to your proposition this is the most efficient way to accomplish this. Am I following you correctly or not?

This is an interesting proposition. What is the logic with which one would go about accomplishing that? BTW I reworked my present project and it worked wonderfully I added TJL to the data I have up to this point and the query author:Metzger mytag:TJL brought back 5hits in 5articles, again this pleases me.

Excellent idea. I will adopt it. Do you own the Theological Journal Library? If so, there appears to be a discrepancy. JETS 1958-1965 don't fall into a Galaxie volume??? Do you know why?

In playing with this idea a bit I've stumbled onto a refinement. You probably are already aware that by grouping the pubdate into decades e.g.(pubdate:198* etc.) much time building your collections is saved.

The method suggested by Lynden and adapted by myself accomplishes what you demonstrate in fewer steps, Namely, e.g. rule; type:journal pubdate:1930. I underlined the last digit because I'm going to reveal my adaptation of Lynden's suggestion after I quote you for emphasis:

Adapting the rule as follows: allows you to quickly build collections by decade e.g. type:journal pubdate:193 or as I prefer pubdate:193*. The beauty of this method is that it is "dynamic" in other words it will automatically add new resources that fit the criteria generated by the rule.

Moreover, you can expand this practice to build broader collections, e.g. type:journal pubdate:193* OR pubdate:194* OR pubdate:195*. Give this collection a name; My Journals Decades 30s, 40, and 50s.

Practically speaking, this allows very powerful queries to be applied very simply, e.g. run a search query in our newly created collection on sanctification, where field is ticked for Heading Text; Large Text and it returns 11 results in 8 articles in 5 resources in (0.28 sec). This is very impressive.
