Prioritize Commentaries

Does anyone have a set standard that they have used for prioritizing commentaries? My thinking is ways to get logos to differentiate between homiletical, exegetical, and devotional commentaries. I know that they are different in terms of how to use them, but what can I do to separate them? Should I tag them? Any help would be great, thank you.

I assume you are wanting to use prioritisation to affect how they are reported in Passage Guides.

For this, I do two things

Create a number of commentary collections - I have collections such as "Academic", "Background", "Classic", "Intermediate", "Introductory", etc. In each collection are commentaries of that "type" - based on my assessment. This can be done by using rules to create dynamic collections or by tagging (I tend to use tagging but others much prefer the dynamic rules). Prioritise commentaries in terms of how I rate them - conceptually within the collections which I have defined but recognising that there is just a single prioritise panel in Logos. So, for example, I have NICOT/NICNT prioritised above WBC - both of which are in my "Academic" collection

I then create a custom passage guide and add the collections I have defined to it.

Then when I run this PG, the commentaries are returned within the collections in the order I have specified.

I have seen people do this in a few different ways. One, you have already mentioned (tagging), building collections of each type of devotional and lastly prioritizing them using "Labels" as described by Morris Proctor in this blog post: http://blog.logos.com/2013/03/logos-5-labels-for-the-prefer-these-resources-list/

I also highly recommend watching Mark Barnes' tutorial video titled "The Library". At about the 15 minute point, he address commentary tagging in very good detail. I personally like this method. Here is the video: http://www.logosbiblesoftwaretraining.com/videos/the-library/

I'm not quite sure of which differences you are referring to so maybe an example will help.

I have created a collection called "Commentaries (Academic)" which I want to use to contain all the commentaries I have which I deem to be academic. This is defined as shown below:

I have then tagged a range of commentaries with the tag "CommType-Academic"

I have prioritised these commentary sets using the Library prioritise panel.

I have then created a custom Passage Guide containing the Academic collection (along with others)

Running this PG causes commentaries to be returned in grouped, prioritised order

Those rule were great! I took the ones that seemed to apply. It took me about an hour to work on it. Do you have any suggestions for how to prioritize my resources within these collections? Is there anyway to get the results to show up based on the ratings that the logos community gave them? If I open the collections I can manipulate the order, does this impact the order that results are displayed within? Thanks again for the link, very helpful!

Neither their order in collections nor their ratings determine the order of results in Passage Gude** as Prioritization is a separate process. Note that you can prioritize individual commentaries, but it is more efficient to specify the Series (if they belong to one).

The idea of multiple collections is to specify the ones you want to appear in the Commentaries sections you can add to a Passage Guide, and then Prioritization determines the order in which the resources appear from each collection. ** order of Search results is not affected by Prioritization, as well as Collections and ratings! That's another matter.
