Speed of Logos: Surface Pro vs MacBook Air

I currently own MacBook Air 2012 edition, but I am thinking to switch to Surface Pro for the following reason:

1. Surface Pro will benefit to have all functions of Logos while I can use it as a tablet

2. Logos on windows is much more polished and reliable than on Mac

To those who own/owned both, would you recommend to switch to Surface Pro? Which device would be faster for Logos?

PS: Logos is my primary program

Bama, it is NOT FAIR to group all Surface products into one category! This is like bashing the MacAir L5 program because the iPad app can't do certain things unless connected to the Internet.

I'm talking about sales. It is true that the Pros have done better (unexpectedly to MSFT) than the RT's… but neither have done particularly well. MSFT has even given away the Pro's free to some teachers groups, and sold them for $400 to another group.

I have an MBA 2011 13" and a Surface Pro. Both are "fast enough" for me. Searches are about the same, indexing runs well on both. The Surface Pro seems to be a little faster on startup, less than 10 seconds to boot to default layout. But I haven't done any timed trials between the two.

It is more pleasant to view the program on the MBA screen since it is larger. When connected to an external monitor both run well. The Surface Pro is more portable since it can be used as a tablet.

The obvious new feature for the Surface Pro is touch.The good news, anything you can click with a mouse you can poke with your finger. The bad news you need pointy fingers. Many of the controls are just too small for me to poke accurately. I use a stylus.

You will read tons of articles telling you how well MSFT is doing with the Pro… yeah right. That .9 for MSFT includes sales of both the "Pro" and "RT" varieties. HERE is a link to the chart, by the way.

I'm not trying to bash the Pro… I'm really not. I just think it is way to soon for me to ever consider jumping on board… especially with the cost & 4 hour battery life. What really irritates me is the "yellow journalism." It doesn't sell papers (or web clicks) to talk about how well Apple is wiping the floor with all the other companies. Apple has nearly 40% market share in terms of devices shipped (not sold… that number is better for Apple) … you should see the profit margin percentages!

i do understand that Apple is more popular and according to your post it seems to me that you are big Apple fan The reason I want to switch Mac Air is because it is sitting on my shelf and collecting my dust. my primary use is Logos and Mac Air seems to be very slow with L5 comparing to my i7 2700k desktop. I would not purchase curent surface pro because it is first edition. I would wait until it get polished, but as for now it's interesting for me to hear from people who already have it. I know it's not going to as fast as my i7 pc but its good to know the curent speed vs Mac Air.

Welcome Gerald to the forum and thank you for your input. If you would have to choose one for the Logos as primary use, which one would you pick Mac Air or Surface Pro?

EDIT: I am not talking about the home use (I have a desktop for that) but for travel so it would always be handy to me, fast, comfortable and reliable

I would never, however, steer someone to an Apple product if I didn't think THEY would love it, and if I didn't think it would best fit their needs. I think there is a substantive difference between the Surface RT and the Surface Pro. I would not recommend the Surface RT to anyone. If someone wants a "cheap" tablet, I would steer them towards some Android device… which I did recently with the Nook. The Surface Pro is different. There are some advantages over the iPad… but I would lean towards someone purchasing an inexpensive windows laptop over the Surface Pro. I don't think most users would be happy with the "touch" experience on apps not designed for it. Gerald said it well… you have to have "pointy fingers." [:)]

I've tried to fall in love with the Mac but my heart won't go there! I prefer to work in the Windows environment.

The highest priorities for me were full Logos functionality and portability. That pushes me toward the Surface Pro. I find it hard to use a laptop on an airplane, this is where the tablet qualities of the Surface Pro excel over the MBA.

Some negatives for the Pro are:

Trying to use the touch features on an app not designed for touch can be exasperating as Alabama24 said.
The full Logos app seems cluttered on the small display. On a large display I normally use docked panels but on the Pro I tend to float the panel and expand to full screen size, especially if I'm reading long passages.
Logos has a Windows 8 app, but to be kind it isn't comparable to the IPad and Android apps. It does provide a nice clutter-free screen for reading.

Observation: Microsoft's original tablet design needed a stylus so finger manipulation is relatively new.

Thankful for a Dell Tablet with a stylus that has a AAA battery to improve pointing accuracy.

Concur Logos 5.1 on Windows is a bit more polished than Mac. Looking in Logos5 forum at the last 200 posts, noticed a couple more Mac crash threads than Windows along with vast majority (over 95 %) of threads about topics other than crashes.
