Update to Current snapshot vs. Update Active

I have searched the wikis and the forums and various training videos (many of the layout videos are still L4). I do not understand the "update active" option in the Layouts dropdown. Does it basically do the same thing as "update to current snapshot" when I right click the triangle on a saved layout?

Yes. As per your screenshot it applies only to the active layout.

so then why does it appear that nothing happens when I click "close active layout". Am I right that the word "active" could be synonymous with "current"? e.g. "update active" means "update the layout that you are currently using". Then I would expect "close active layout" to do the same thing as the "close all" button that I have installed on my shortcut bar. But when I hit "close active layout" all it seems to do is gray out the "update active" option.

I think I need a clear definition of "active" layout.

The active layout is the one named in the Title bar of the Logos window and it is ticked in the Layouts menu. It is the one you are currently using.

That's a dangerous command as it removes the identification of the active layout from the Title bar and Layouts menu, and then you have to restore an active layout by clicking on a named layout; which may not give you the physical layout you wanted. It should have a red hyperlink colour or be removed IMHO.
