Library Tip: Forcing a scroll-to-top

I get super tired of having to scroll-to-the-top, when clicking on the title, last-updated, etc columns. Especially with a touch screen.

The post-sort default is to display your selected resource at the top (which is almost never what I want).

But ... if you first click on a rollup column (eg myTags, Author, etc) and then Title, Last-Updated, etc, it defaults to the scroll-top.

Apparently, the rollup type columns force a 'release' of your current selected resource.

I can't get that to work - it must be a Mac thing!

    Might be. I'm on a TRS-80!

The other flukey design 'feature' is if you are 'working' in a Title, Last-updated, etc type column, and then re-sort by a rollup column, they leave the scroll at the bottom (who'd have thought). But ... (!) ... if you sort by a rollup column (eg Author), and then sort by another rollup column (eg myTags), then they'll move the scroll to the top (its expected location).

My guess is they're using a sort flag, but not initializing it.

    I misread this, so

    •   click on a rollup column (eg myTags, Author, etc) and then Title, Last-Updated

    didn't work, but

    • click on a rollup column (eg myTags, Author, etc) and then Last-Updated

    did work!

So, thank you for the tip.

The scroll is at the top in both cases - assuming you open one of the categories to reveal the resources and the scroll bar.

In my case, I have maybe 100 or so tags. So clicking on the myTag heading always has the z's instead of the a's showing (scroll bar always displayed).

Another flukey issue is that the first tag is never displayed; I always have to scroll up 1 to see it.

<Deleted. I think I misunderstood, due to reading out of context.>

EDIT: I'm not sure I understand what you're saying, but on Mac, whatever column I resort by, the scrollbar always seems to be at the top, and the selection always seems to be gone.

That has been my experience also.

This is where your description needs to be illustrated. If I am working in the Title column and then select the Series column, the scroll handle can be positioned as shown or at the bottom or the top, but the headings are always sorted a to z.

Thanks for bringing this up Denise. I too have been annoyed by these very two issues which I often encounter. I have considered posting something about it but never bothered but I'm glad you did.

I'm not sure why it was designed this way. I agree with you that it really should be improved.

OK. Lazy Denise is going to do a better job of illustrating the problem(s). Please note this thread was a workaround after 4 years of re-scrolling each time (just one more example of lazy Denise!).

PROBLEM #1: Clicking on a rollup column leaves the scroll bar at the bottom. Every time I dutifully scroll back up, which is a super-pain on a touch-screen.

    ..

PROBLEM #2: Re-sorting leaves the top rollup missing in action. An additional click is always required. In the example below, the rollup '_LogosOnly' is missing, hidden at the top.

Denise, you are not lazy. You are just trying to avoid being continually annoyed (like me). Besides, if I were to agree that you were lazy I'd have to admit the same thing. [;)]

Here's another way to handle the problem.  Once you re-sort the list, and you want to go to the top, right-click in the scroll bar, and then select "Top" in the pop-up menu:

You can also right-click on the up-arrow at the top of the scroll bar and select "Scroll Here".

(EDIT: this may be a windows-specific function.  It also works in non-Logos windows)

Thanks Todd, that is another little thing that I didn't know although I'm not sure it saves any time from simply dragging up the scroll bar. I also do suspect that it is a windows function.

It wasn't. Since it works correctly on Mac, it's a bug.

Denise, I grew up with irony, so I tend to love the way you use irony in your comments. You're an absolute master at it. That said, one thing I've never managed to get is why you first put up with bugs for years, and then 'report' them in ways that makes it 95% certain that Logos won't see your 'report'. You're behaving as if you actually want Logos not to fix your bugs, so that you can continue to be annoyed at them.

If this irritates you, write a proper bug report thread with a heading beginning with BUG:, and either repeat the post I'm responding to, or just link to it, so that Logos gets a chance to see it and do something about it. They're rather unlikely to pay attention to a 'tip'.

(EDIT: this may be a windows-specific function.  It also works in non-Logos windows)

Well, it doesn't work for me on Mac.

Yes, fgh, you're very likely correct.

For example, in the vertical TOC for all Logos resources, if there's a rollup entry at the bottom, and you click it to expand it, they don't automatically re-scroll to reveal the sub-entry (unlike MS menu combos going back into the 80s).

I have a well known image processing software starting with a 'C'. For years, it could not reliably deliver a user-selected PNG format, instead defaulting to its native format (but a workaround working). I watched for years as the developers seemed to fiddle with it unsuccessfully. Finally, the  software moved to its next major update ($$) and I switched to IrFan.

I have a fairly new music composition software starting with an 'S'. It has run its course of bug-cleanups, but still can not put vertical and horizontal scrollbars up, when the user view exceeds the screen. So a tricky work-around works.

The common denominator is developers who don't use the software. What other explanation is possible? Excessive dependence on beta versions?

And yes .. I probably value the irony. The obstinate personality of the developer vs the obstinate user who refuses to clean up the mess (better to step around it for years!).
