Glad I could be of assistance.[Y]
You know, I have it, but the 12 days made me realize it. I opened and bookmarked it to get familiar with it.
I will let you know at 12:01 AM PT [:D]
Ok, initial response is this book has possibilities. It draws from a great many external sources that shed a bit more information about what is being discussed in the Gospels. I am just beginning a study of Mark, so I looked at references to the early chapter and found quotes from Josephus on the beheading of John the Baptist and this little tidbit concerning the baptism of Jesus:
In the Gospel of the Nazareans, cited here in Jerome’s work, Jesus is said to have had a discussion with his family in which he asserts that he has no need for John’s baptism because—unless he is mistaken—he has not committed any sin.
If you are a history buff, this book would definitely be worthwhile, as it would if you were doing an in depth study of one of the Gospels.
Thanks Terry. Now I remember seeing those "early Fathers" etc when I opened the book. That sort of thing--quoting the early church fathers, etc--seems to be gaining steam, what with Oden's 3. vol. Theology etc., Ancient Commentary series. I personally like those kind of resources.
It is nice to have the references linked to the actual resources.... except Eusebius, Ecclesiastical History because it is hidden in the ECF, as well as other writing in ECF.
It is not always easy to extract this kind of information from the ancient texts, which makes this resource very useful.
Okay, then help us get the granddaddy of these moving on to production - Catena Aurea
