All of a sudden Help has stopped working. I have restarted the program and the computer. It's as if the files have disappeared. It worked the first 10 times I needed it!
What happened and what should I do?
As I posted elsewhere, Help crashed my program this morning. These issues might be related.
Esther
Did you get a fix?
No, and it just happened again. Guess I'll just have to make a nuisance of myself here on the forums asking the questions I would normally look up in the Help files until someone pays attention to this..[;)]
A 4.0a version of Help, which is not compatible with 4.0, was mistakenly published for download yesterday, and it downloaded to some computers before being pulled. Yours was probably one of those. The 4.0a update is due out soon (currently in beta testing). When the update is released and installed on your system, the problem will be resolved.
Thanks,Melissa
It's possible deleting the logos4help.logos4 file from your resources folder might force a re-download and cure the problem. I don't have SR-7 to test, sorry.
Mark, I asked George a similar question regarding the similar issue with excerpts, he didn't think that would do the trick. Or at least he didn't encourage it.

Richard DeRuiter (MVP) said he thinks they aren't bothering to put the old version back on the server because 4.0a is expected to go "gold" soon.
Wow, I didn't know that hiding resources actually deleted the files from your hard disk.
The old version is still available at http://resources.assets.logos.com/lls_logos4help/2009-10-28T21_16_54Z/LOGOS4HELP.logos4
The problem is that the server forbids downloads outside of Logos.

So how can one force a download from inside logos if you've deleted your post that explained to us how? (I suppose that method didn't actually work after all??)
I'm still using SR7. I've tried deleting logos4help.logos4 (well, moving it somewhere for safe keeping) and restarting Logos. The help file is empty and nothing downloads. I tried "update now" and "sync now" and neither of those worked. Isn't there some way to force Logos to redownload your resources if you accidently deleted any of them? Or is that implemented only in 4.0a?
Rosie,
did you try "Update Resources"?

I should explain:
"Update now" is for incremental updates. It checks what's been updated on the server against your last update.
"Sync now" is for user items - layouts, notes, etc.
"Update Resources" does a full scan of your resource directory and checks each item against your license and against the latest version on the server. It takes a while...

This is a very useful explanation, of which I took some of your text and put it on the wiki as it was not clear on there.
I deleted the post because although it normally works (i.e. it used to work for help, and it still works for other resources), it doesn't now work for help. Logos attempts to download the help file, but even it gets a "Forbidden" error, and it therefore fails. It must be possible to get that file (new users presumably get it), but I don't know how.

Rosie, did you try "Update Resources"?
Silly me! I thought I remembered there was a command called "update resources" and I did actually try to type it in, but the dropdown didn't propose to complete it for me yet by the time I'd typed "update resou" so I gave up and figured it was something I'd read about that was in the beta 4.0a only. But -- lo and behold -- if I type just one more letter ("update resour"), Logos proposes "Tools > update resources." Whaddya know! I'm running that now as we speak and will report back tomorrow if it fixes the Help problem.
Thanks, Damian. And thanks, Donovan, for clarifying the explanations on the wiki. I should have checked there first. I need to start getting in the habit of checking "Recent Changes" on the wiki, too.
I have confirmed that "update resources" fixes the Help crashing problem in SR-7. Yay!! Shout it from the mountaintops. And then get ready for 4.0a soon, so this will be moot.
Glad it worked out - try not to beat me elsewhere with an answer for the next 24 hours....
I'm off to bed now, so you've got at least another 8 hours free of my interference...
This did not work for me. I followed the steps outlined: typed "update resour" into the command bar, clicked on Tools->update resources, and the process took about 5 minutes, then a little box appeared in the lower right hand corner saying "no updates available". Tried Help...crash.
How does one find out whether they have SR-7 or any other release? Where does one find the commands to "update" or "sync" or for that matter any number of commands that must be typed into the command bar and are not available on a menu somewhere? Is there a list of the commands to type in?
Sorry about all the questions, but I have no Help, lol!
This did not work for me.
I'm sort of guessing that Rosie hid the help file (or flat out deleted it). Did you do this?

Click on the question mark in the top right corner and select "About Logos Bible Software). It'll tell ya.

In the help file
Or the wiki: http://wiki.logos.com/Logos_4_Commands

oops. No, I didn't. I'll try that next if I can figure out how.

Yay wiki! Thanks yet again.
Sorry, I should have made it clear. I had already deleted my logos4help.logos4 file so when I ran "updated resources" Logos found that the file was missing and downloaded it again. If it wasn't missing on your installation, then you will get "no updates available." So find the file and delete it. Then run "update resources" again. You'll probably have to close and restart Logos after it all to get the new help file.
EDIT: I just finished answering all the rest of your questions too, only to discover that Damian had beat me to it! I really was heading off to bed! Honest!

When I saw your name on this thread, I decided you were one of these types that only need a short power sleep and you were at it again!
I haven't done anything to my help file (in fact I rarely use it) but this morning any attempt to search for a topic results in a Logos 4 crash. After reading through this thread I'm confused .... should I delete the help file and then update, just update or grind my teeth and wait? [:)]

Delete the help file (or better yet move it to a backup folder somewhere), and then run "update resources" -- go off and get a coffee; it could take a while. It has to check all your licenses against your resources and compare them all to the versions on the servers and download anything you're missing, which will include the help file.

No, I'm just way out of whack on my sleep cycle. I have been going to bed later and later each night (creeping into the next morning) and then sleeping until early afternoon. It's nuts. But the natural human circadian rhythm is around 25 hours, and I don't have a regular day job -- I'm self employed -- so I can go with what my body wants to do. (Or rather that's my excuse. It's really just that I'm addicted to the computer and can't stop even when I know I'm tired.)
I moved the help file out of the resources folders (and renamed it) and the ran update resources. Logos 4 did download something but when I restarted it and went to help theres nothing in the file!!!! It opens a tab but it simply has a search field and does nothing (but it doesn't crash [:S]). Any ideas?

That's what it looked like for me after I'd deleted the help file.
Did you ever see the blue Logos icon in your tray with a message coming up from it saying something like "there are new resources to install"? That popped up for me and when I clicked on it, I got the menu that offered an option to restart Logos for me, which I chose to do. I know you shut it down manually and restarted, so that should have taken care of it, but try shutting it down again and restarting one more time. Sometimes it takes another restart to actually recognize that there are new resource that have been downloaded. Also look in your resources folder and double check that the help file indeed has been downloaded. If not, then try "update resources" again (I think I closed and restarted Logos after deleting the help file before running "update resources"; so that could make a difference).
Thanks ... I found that the "new" help file was, indeed, in the downloaded" folder. After three restarts Logos 4 finally grabbed it and it seems to be working now. I just have to think the correct way to rectify this problem would have been for the folks at Logos to push the correct help file out as an update.
Yes, that would definitely have been better. I think they are preoccupied trying to get 4.0a finished -- it's supposed to ship any day now. They put out a Release Candidate for it yesterday.

I, too, had the same difficulty and followed this thread in getting a handle on the solution. It kept failing each time, no matter how many times I restarted L4.
So, I did a drastic thing after remembering David Hooton's instruction on installing on multiple computers: I recovered the HELP file from my backup, deleted the one in place, moved the backup HELP file to that location, returned to C:\Users\[name]\AppData\Local\Logos4\Data\[random].wdb\ResourceManager to delete the ResourceManager.db. Once that was deleted I simply closed the directory, and opened L4. Considering that I have a new Windows 7 computer with 8-gigs of RAM on a terabyte HD, it took about 30 minutes to recompile and index. Once that was done, the HELP file worked just fine.
While I am not necessarily recommending this drastic action, I thought to let all know this is what worked for me.
What I was originally looking for was where my priority list is located, and now I'll try to go back and find it.
Hope this gives some an idea.
God bless

---edit---I saw that others had solved the issue while I was working on the solution here. such fun!!

To find out which version of L4 you have click on the little circle with the question mark in it on the upper right part of the Logos window, then click "About Logos Bible Software" A screen will pop up and tell you which version you have.
There are a number of commands that can be typed into the command bar. Some of them are undocumented. Most of us heard about them from one time or another from a Logos tech who suggested a command to resolve some other problem. I don't know of a list of commands, but it sounds like a good Wiki project.
Rosie solved her problem by first deleting the offending help file. Since you didn't do it, "update resources" won't help, you. What you could do is delete the help file, restart Logos and then update resources. It may require restarting Logos twice after deleting and before checking, I'm not sure how the discovery would work in the case of manual deletion.

You know, I thought it was there, went looking for that and still missed it.
Now, where did I put my cell phone . . .

It wasn't very easy to find (I used to only be able to find it by going to "All Pages"), so I made a link to it from the main wiki page, as many people have asked for this info lately, and it's the kind of quick reference thing people will want to go back and refer to again. Ditto for the Logos 4 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows, which I also linked in to the main page.

I just about did that today and then I was looking at the revision history and saw you did it. GJ! [Y]
The Release Candidate of 4.0a has some expanded help files - even a couple of graphics. It is good to see the progress.
I've found the beta is very stable, so today I installed it over my SR-7 without a problem.
If you want more help or can't get an uncorrupted help file, I'd go to http://downloads.logos.com/LBS4/InstallerBeta/Logos4Setup.exe and install L4.0a RC1.
