Which tablet is best?

I have been using LOGOS for study and sermon prep on my PC for several years and now have a desire to go mobile using a tablet; which works best..?

Hi David - and welcome to the forums

The mobile app is further advanced on iOS (so iPad) but it has been making good strides in the Android space.
Probably one of the biggest things still lacking on Android is direct access to notes documents.
So for fullest capability I would go with an iPad but there are many users on the forums who really enjoy their Android tablets.

As many of the Tablets may get listed here would you please give us a hint as to how readable they are in darkness and in the full light of the sun. Thanks.

I don't think you are going to find a great difference in Tablets... at least the ones with the better screens. If you are wanting good readability in the sun, you aren't looking for a tablet, but an eInk reader.

Thanks! But I NEED Logos app on what ever I get [Tending towards the iPad but expensive - was using my granddaughter's Nook HD+ and am impressed]

Making Disciples! Logos Ecosystem = LogosMax on Microsoft Surface Pro 7 (Win11), Android app on tablet, FSB on iPhone & iPad mini, Proclaim (Proclaim Remote on Fire Tablet).

I pad verses surface pro seems to be the challenge. I’m comfortable with both but
want the best overall for LOGOS0 -
On the Surface Pro I can read my personal books and do morph searches. I can also use the Bible Word Study tool when not connected to the internet.
If I don't need to access all the features of L5, the iPad app is quite nice (although I haven't used it since March when I lost use of the iPad I was using).

The moble apps are NOT "Logos 5," and thier functionality isn't the same. Many features require an Internet connection. That is what you would get with the iPad. I believe that the surface pro can run the windows mobile app, but that is currently ONLY a reader. The iPad app is much more advanced. On the other hand, the surface PRO (not RT) can run the full version of Logos. Personally I don't think that is a good option for most people... It doesn't have a large drive, it's underpowered, it flopped in the market of ideas... But it will run L5. If you do lean that route, remember that your ENTIRE library, along with index files etc. will consume a very large part of your storage space. (The mobile apps CAN download your entire library [minus non mobile enabled resources... Another thing to consider] but were designed to access books from the "cloud.")

The iPad mini isn't great for Logos only because the resolution is low compared to large iPad or Nexus 7 as others mentioned.

I'll offer the Asus VivoTab Smart for your consideration. It runs full Windows 8, so you can install Logos 5. It is half the price of the Surface Pro, and comes with Office Home and Student. You can install L5 on a microsd card, as long as you format it as NTFS. It's lighter than the Surface, and has longer battery life. On the con side, the Asus is slower than the Surface and its screen resolution isn't quite as good. It all depends on what you really need.

As an ereader, I would choose the new Nexus 7 update (if you can find one without gps and touch functionality issues - which some have claimed has been fixed recently). Be advised the search functionality is buried too deep in the Logos app though. IMHO The app is primarily for reading. Logos has failed to update the useful search functionality in any meaningful useful way so far on an android.
I would wait to purchase anything for Windows as every single Windows Tablet has issues. I also do not like or support Apple products (I am not sure why concerned Bible believing conservative Christian would - but thats for another forum not this one.)
In short, none of them, especially The Surface Pro, is worth buying.
The SP is expensive, backlit and hard to read at times, has lousy battery life, and worse no volume of any merit.
Mr. Lancon....it may be best to wait. I have for months. Paying over or up to 1K for anything seems pointless right now!

I have read there may be another SP by the end of the year...

Mark, I have read what others have written about this cheaper Windows Tablet (Asus VivoTab) but I have read it topples over quite easily, is atom based (which we all know is really too slow to be helpful) and one needs to be a programmer to get it all configured out of the box too, huh?

I am enjoying logos on my new nexus 7, and it is great to just pop it in your pocket.
The best tablet is often the one you can have with you.

It all depends on what you need and want. I have no toppling issues, because I bought a cheap sturdy stand. I'm using the tablet on my lap to write this. As for speed, L5 takes 24 seconds to boot up. A Scripture passage search takes 14 seconds. Going into reading mode takes 10. How much speed do I really need? Two sips of coffee and I'm ready for the next step in my research! A reflective pace works for me, especially in studying God's Word. I'm no programmer, yet I have L5 working well.
The new Nexus 7 is a great Android choice, from what I've seen. You gain portability, but lose some Logos capabilities. Again, it all depends on what you need!

I think the best advice currently is to "wait" a few more months.
To "go mobile using a tablet" may be giving us a false idea of what you expect when using a tablet.
Is your expectation to use the tablet just for study/reading or for the full "study and sermon prep" that you are familiar with on your PC?If you want the full capability of your PC in a mobile/tablet form then you will need an expensive tablet base on the full Windows operating system (NOT the RT version), many examples, most currently with insufficient storage (SSD) capacity (below 256GB), most with poor performing CPU (in terms of either processing power (Atom) or battery life (3rd generation i5 or i7) and all expensive when fully kitted out. Suggest you either wait until the next generation of tablets (4th quarter of 2013) (256GB SSD, 4th generation Haswell i5 or i7 with a full Windows 8.1 version (Home Premium or Pro NOT RT), or, if you can afford it (more than $1500 fully equipped) AND need it now, compromise on a touch screen convertable laptop, such as the Sony VAIO Duo 13 (custom upgrade to 256GB SSD), SONY ATIV Book 9 Plus (again with custom upgrade to 256GB). Alternatively you may consider a MacBook Air. Reason for 256GB is that you will feel VERY restricted on what you can do on a 128GB or smaller system given you have paid a lot for the system and otherwise have full windows capability. You can consider a regular non windows tablet if you are primarily interested in using a tablet for study and are willing to accept Logos capability below the full Logos 5 capability (Logos apps for iPad and Android do not have the full capability of Logos 5 because the regular tablet processors cannot handle it efficiently, ask anyone (like me) who runs Logos 5 on an Intel Atom Netbook). You will need a stylus pen of some sort if you are using a full Windows tablet without a keyboard/mouse-pad.
If you get a tablet, remember you will likely need to add a (bluetooth) keyboard if you plan to do sermon prep (unless you are just taking a few notes and are comfortable using a touch screen keyboard).
If you are just looking for a tablet for study/reading then your next choice is size of tablet, 10 or 11 inch model or a handheld 7 to 8 inch model.
Either an iPad of a good Android operating system tablet could work for you. A key thing will be the size of your library (and any intended libary expansion over the period you will use the tablet, plus other uses for the tablet). You may find 16GB (or smaller) models restrictive (prompts to delete files or apps as the memory is getting full), so you may want to consider 32GB as the minimum (many are MUCH smaller and will function only with a small library). Remember you cannot store your Logos library books on an external microSD card (these are primarily for photos and music etc).
Screen resolution is important for reading as is the readability of the screen under high light situations (indoors or outdoors). Many screens are too reflective and difficult to use in some situations, even indoors.
iPads and iPad minis work well with their Logos app (rumours are of a new model coming this fall so you may see a significant price drop coming soon on existing models).
The Nexus 7 (Google/Asus, Android operating system) is probably the best Android handheld (mini) at the present time, look for and if necessary wait for the 32GB model rather than the 16GB model (relatively small price difference), very good screen resolution. If budget is a consideration you may find bargains as other manufacturers with smaller capacity memory and poorer screen resolution reduce prices to clear current stocks of poorer performing models.
My preference in regular size tablets if for Samsung, again 32GB should be your minimum for Android tablets (and 256GB for full Windows tablets or touch screen lighweight laptops). Check how reflective the screen is for any tablet and consider how and where you will use it. Avoid single core processors and go for quad core (over dual core) if you can (on any tablet). All operating systems will want to "call home" via a wireless internet or 3G/4G connection while you want to read/study or type, especially when you first start the sytem to do something important right now. Allow one processor to do these background tasks and ensure you have another for your Logos app ). (Phones want to "call home" via the internet, update your library and check for phonecalls and text messages while you study using your app - little wonder you find things can become unresponsive to anything other than turning to the next page.)
If you want to do sermon prep and study at the same time you may want to reconsider the full Windows or iOS capability of a lightweight laptop. Tabbing between apps (switching between your notes and reading/study pane) is not quite as quick and simple on a regular tablet app.....

Not trying to argue, but for my <non windows using> edification... Can't the surface pro run the windows apps that run on the RT? My understanding is that they can, but I may have misunderstood. Also, it is my understanding that MSFT claims that both the RT & Pro run "windows 8," albeit one is a crippled version of the other. Is that wrong?

Yes the Pro can run the Win8 APP AND the Logos5 PROGRAM. The Windows8 RT is "crippled" the same way that iOS is a "crippled" form of osX.

Thanks, I have a small laptop that does what I need just not touch... I think I'll wait till fourth quarter to see what happens. Great information confirming what I was afraid of. What I "think" I want is the ability to study/build sermons using full LOGOS and use it in the pulpit. I'm just need to think this out better before I spend the money. I don't mind paying a little more but want to make sure I use it as much as possible.

My Ipad first gen was crashing with L5 along with a few other apps. I picked up a Nexus 7 a few weeks back and L5 runs great on it. As an Apple fan boy, I must confess that the Andriod tablets are catching up. For the price it is hard to beat the Nexus 7.

Do you mean the iOS Logos APP and the Android Logos APP since "L5" will not run on those operating systems? (L5 only runs on full versions of Windows or osX)

Yes, the Logos ios app.

Steve - Do you still have your iPad? Did you try a delete and reinstall of the app? Complete wipe and reinstall of the iPad?

I believe Jesus will return before we all get a useable, inexpensive, fast, fanless, low-temperature, long-battery, Windows 8.x machine that runs Logos 5 and beyond. There are such a glut of useless machines out there and more RT (really terrible) ones to come from what I read.

Bama,
Yep, did a factory reset and did not reinstall anything but the L5 app. It ran better, but after a few mins it would crash. I installed it on my wife's new ipad with retina and the L5 app ran very smooth and had no problems.
The L5 app was not the only app crashing some of the other apps would also crash.

Thanks for the clarification. Do you have large note files / highlighting?
FYI - it would be better to not use the term "L5" when referring to the mobile app. L5 is a desktop app, and the development cycle is unrelated.

if you want to go cheap and large screen, the Nook HD+ is selling for $150. 9-inch, full HD screen. Dual core processor with 1gig ram.

I have the older Nexus 7 and it's very good. Would be my first choice in the new version. I love the iPad but it constantly gets borrowed.
FWIW, I find that a very light laptop still makes a much better choice than an iPad if you want a real Logos experience and something very portable. I snagged a first version HP Ultrabook on closeout at Walmart for way less than an iPad and it's just fine with Logos 5. Boots near instant with an SSD and runs fast too.

some will chuckle reading this.
I bought the nexus 7 version 2 updated Tablet yesterday (selling the first one i owned to my brother in law).
It will tide me over I hope for a little while while I wait and pray that the Surface 2 is worth purchasing one day soon.
The Nexus 7 version 2 does not run the full windows version of Logos 5 but it will do for now.
I just need a reader for school anyway. I will stick to my old laptop for now for other things.

I see my hope to run Logos on a cheaper better Surface Pro 2 is dashed.
Heavy sigh. I did not dream of a new and better kickstand (can you believe that is what they most tout)
I should stick to what I have, enjoy it, and actually crack open one of the 5 Bible Translations (actual books) I own for a change too.
Bless you all.
