Word Biblical Commentary has been taken over by Zondervan

Just read the fall Zondervan catalog and noticed that Zondervan is taking over the Word Biblical Commentary series. I guess that's why the new volumes in prepub have not come out yet.

Thomas Nelson publishers was acquired by HarperCollins (who already owned Zondervan) in July 2012. Looks like HarperCollins is shuffling their Christian book assets around. I wonder if the Thomas Nelson imprint will go away, or maybe it'll be focused on popular-oriented works..

I wonder if this is the type of event which could result in a price increase of the WBC?

Well.....at the least, I don't think we will see Word Biblical Commentary go on sale as cheaply as it use to. But the upside is that Zondervan is committed to brining out new updated titles to refresh the series. I sure would like to see the Acts commentaries and the third volume of Job come out to finish the set.

May I gently suggest that Logos put up a WBC sale one last time? I'm sure many will bite.

Sometimes the sales are in conjunction with the publisher and for certain the publisher does control the ultimate price. For example if product "Apple" costs Logos $12 royalties and "Apple" printed retails for $100 and Logos normally sells "Apple" for $40, but even if Logos wanted to sell "Apple" for $15, the contracts state that the publisher will not let them sell it for less than $35, without special agreement. Now I am not sure on the margins which is why i used fictitious publication "Apple" but I do know that some f the sales Logos and other Bible software have had in the past are only available because the publisher allows them to lower it. I do not remember the product but I remember within the last year or so an item going on sale with Logos, Accordance, and Olivetree, the sales literature made it clear from at least 2 of the companies that the product was at this one time special price with the cooperation of the publisher. So while Logos might like to have a super sale on WBC it is quite possible Zondervan would block it. Indeed I have no idea how these contracts work, perhaps nelson products need contracts reworked. But I would hope not there.

I'd say it's too late for that. Zondervan already owns WBC.

One of the other features of WBC is that it has always been possible to buy individual volumes from Logos. This helped me before I upgraded to the full set as very few of the good commentaries (by this evangelical's definition anyway) are available singly. Zondervan, however, seems to prefer its books to be sold in collections, and we have recently seen Wallace's Greek grammar go from being available as a single book to being available only as part of the Original Languages collection when Zondervan fully took it over. Anyone wanting a particular volume in the WBC series who can't afford the full set might do well to buy it in the next few months.

The Fall Catalogue of what? Can you say more about the NIV Study Bible? I've been requesting it for years...

Predicting the results of these kinds of things is pretty inexact science. However, based on Zondervan's track record, there is certainly a chance that it will either be re-bundled and not sold individually (not likely, but possible) or a price increase will happen. Z is not famous for great sales.

This makes me happy I took advantage of a "super-sale" several years ago. I believe the price was $399. I almost didn't bite because I really didn't have the money to throw down - but my credit card jumped out of my wallet and flew into my hand before I could hang up the phone.

Happens to me on a regular basis. Have had thoughts of punishing it. Perhaps by wearing it to exhaustion while perusing the Logos resource catalog [:D]

I know a shredder that will do just the trick ...
Or, better yet, mail it to me. I'll beat it into submission... [6]

So, this is just a simple question: What's the big deal with the NIV Study Bible? Does it have better notes than my ESV or NASB or Scofield, etc. or is this just some personal preference by some?
Thanks!
