L4 commands a complete mystery to me

Can someone please explain L4 commands. I see they are referenced to on several posts and this link is given http://wiki.logos.com/Logos_4_Commands

but when I push alt d as suggested on that web page nothing happens and there is nothing in the menu bar that says command. So how to do you get to a screen where you can enter a command

Sadly, not all the commands on that list work with Mac Alpha 8 because they haven't been implemented yet. The only thing I know to do is try one and see if it does anything. The error of searches being launched when you type a comand does not help sadly and all we can do is hope that they improve this in a future version soon. They have been releasing updates at least every two weeks. I'm hoping they drop another one before Christmas... though not the day right before Christmas mind you, in case we have really big problems and they disappear for the holidays!

I think this only works on the windows version. BTW, how do you do an ALT key on a Mac keyboard? I thought this was Windows only.

I don't know the Mac very well, but I'm pretty sure that the Option key on the Mac is the equivalent to the Alt key on Windows. However, it doesn't behave the same way on the Mac as the Windows Alt+<letter> shortcuts for accessing menus and things. I'm not sure how Logos implements the Alt+ shortcuts on the Mac side, if at all. Here's more about that from Wikipedia: "The Option key is a modifier key present on Apple keyboards. It is located between the Control key and Command key on a typical Mac keyboard....Since the 1990s, "alt" typically appears on the key, as well, for use as an Alt key with non-Mac software, such as...Windows programs. The Option key in a Mac operating system functions differently from the Alt key under...Windows. Most notably, it is not used to access menus or hotkeys, but is instead used as a modifier for other command codes, and also to provide easier access to various accents and symbols."

But you ought to still be able to get up to the command bar by clicking in it. If you're on the Home page (the one with the Logos logo in the upper left), make sure you're not confusing the command bar (at the very top of the Logos window to the right of the Tools menu) for the passage box (on the Home page just under the Logos logo).

Well all Alt+D does on the Windows side is bring your focus to the command box, so it appears it is doing that for you too, and then outputting the ∂ character. You can always delete it. But this way you can get the focus up there to start typing something else without having to touch the mouse. Some people are faster as keyboard users than mixing keyboard/mouse input. Hopefully Logos will find some other way of doing accelerators (which is what these Alt+ shortcuts are called in Windows) that won't conflict with standard Mac behavior.

I've just done some Googling, and I think the Command key on the Mac (the one that looks like a cloverleaf thingy) is actually used for menu (and other) accelerators. Try using that + D and see if it take you to the command box.

You are correct concerning the use of the Command Key on Macs. In most applications, Menu items can be selected by Control-M followed by the first letter of the target menu. Then you can use the down arrow to select the individual menu item (or after moving down 1 item, type the letter of the desired item).

Cmd-D (as the Command Key is normally abbreviated) has not been implemented in the Mac version, at least it did not work on my system.

EDIT: Why don't I try these things before I touch the keyboard? [:D] Control-M works the Menu Bar on L4 Mac as expected. You can then either type the first letter of the desired Menu or use the Tab Key to move along the Menu Bar. After selecting the desired Menu, the first touch of the Down Arrow enables that Menu. You can then select the desired item either with the Down Arrow or by typing the first letter of the command.
