Preorders

Logos recently changed my preorder of N. T. Wright's much anticipated new works on Paul. This was done with no explanation either by email or by phone when talking to a Logos representative. Has anyone else had this experience or problem? If orders are changed, why should orders be made. Please help with this.

Hi John, welcome to the forums. Is the change you mention the one discussed in this thread - that the pre-order was split into two because of a delay in publication of one of the volumes?

John, you will find many products are changed frequently for many reasons. An example is the Minor Prophet Commentaries that were released yesterday were going to be released on October 2. I have noticed several products ship dates get moved for whatever reason and I have quit asking why. I simply wait until they do ship. Welcome to the forums.

This does happen occasionally typically because Logos manage to secure an additional book for a collection or because there are issues with a publisher that means that a book becomes unavailable. In my experience this happens to very few orders and by making us aware of the change Logos give us the option to cancel if we want. The only alternative in these circumstances would be that the order is cancelled by Logos and we then would have to reinstate it if we want the product on the revised terms.

My post was not very clear. The change to my preorder was to another book that I did not order. This change was made recently without my knowledge. I did cancel the order. Thanks for the responses. John Anderson

I'm still not clear what you are referring to here.

When I originally signed up for the forthcoming N T Wright pre-pub, it included 3 volumes:

Paul and the Faithfulness of God
Pauline Perspectives: Essays on Paul 1978–2013
Paul and His Recent Interpreters

A delay at the publishers meant that the 3rd one would not be available until next year. Logos understands that some of us are hanging out for these (especially PFG), so they had the grace to break the collection into two, so they could still deliver the first two this year.

A side-effect of that decision was that it made it possible for you to cancel the separate order if you didn't want it. Sounds like you did that. I didn't, as anything that Tom writes has value for me.

So, if I understand correctly, Logos didn't sign you up for something you hadn't ordered. They split one of your orders (for a collection of 3 books) into two orders, and you then cancelled one of those. Is that what happened?

Thank you Allen for your response. Your explanation may have been what happened. My order that was posted by Logos included "Paul and the faithfulness of God," and "Pauline Perspectives." The price reflected this. Recently, "Perspectives was dropped and Paul and His Recent Interpreters added. No price was included. This surprised me. Logos did not have the Grace to provide an explanation.

Originally, It was understood that Logos was the only publisher to provide these works by Mr. Wright. Being my favorite author, I was excited to place the order.

However, Amazon is also providing his new works in paperback editions. Paul and the Faithfulness of God" out in November of 2013 and the price is almost identical to that of Logos. Amazon did have the grace to inform buyers that it was unknown when the "Perspective" book would be available and that the "Interpreters" book would be available In February of 2014. so not this year.

Logos did not have the grace to inform us why changes were made. I did not understand so cancelled the entire order and placed an order with Amazon.

Thank you for your explanation but please advise the software company, Logos, to inform readers and buyers of changes when they are made rather than surprise us. Thanks so much. John Anderson.

you are mistaken about the paperback versions.They were always to be printed as was the case for the other three volumes in the series.

David, either you are I am very confused. I said nothing about paperback books. If you will read all my posts the position I was trying to explain is very clear. LOGOS changed my order at a very late date with no explanation. That is all I was concerned about. The person who answered my call to "Help" had no explanations except to suggest I had inadvertently hit a key on my keyboard. How am I to know if LOGOS would not change an order made in the future? Of Course I deleted the order and do not anticipate ordering anything else.

well, if I may be so bold as to jump in here: since your next to latest post claims Amazon selling these in paperback editions, I think David wasn't confused. But your overall post was not about the kind of paper-book edition Amazon sells, but about the fact that they do. It would have really surprized me, if not.

Logos changed everybodys orders for this bundle. The reason was that they had agreed with the publisher to bundle the three books, but the third one will not be finalized until 2014. To not have us wait until then, they split the bundle orders (which all were for three books, there was no individual ordering of these) into two orders: a bundle of two books in 2013 and the third book in 2014. You have already been pointed to the thread explaining this.

Why so? Nothing got lost for you through Logos' actions.

Actually I'm surprized that you feel ill-treated by Logos - their action was in our interest, and it was probably the only proper thing they could do after the publisher failed to meet their self-imposed time schedule.

All of you have ignored my original post and subsequent quick replies and posts. After my first complaint and after talking to a person on "Help," I was not pointed to any thread explaining this. This person was apparently unaware of any explanation or such threads. If he had given the explanation you and others have given here there would have been no problem Closing the gate after the horses are out was no help to me then. All I wanted was a simple explanation as to why my preorder of months before, was changed. All of your explanations now were no help to me then. I was new to LOGOS and certainly enjoying the great software giant with its offers and information. The actions of LOGOS were in their interests as they made the changes to my order only the day before. There was no explanation in the home start page of problems with release dates. Such was not the case and I have never seen an apology, only a feeble defense from those who had apparently have had their personal feelings hurt. Why do you continue to write about this? Don't you understand my concern then? There is no defense for what happened to me then. But I appreciate you all.

You (like me!) ordered Paul and the Faithfulness of God (3 vols.). This contained three volumes, (1) Paul and the Faithfulness of God, (2) Pauline Perspectives, (3) Paul and His Recent Interpreters.

The third volume, Paul and His Recent Interpreters got delayed by the publisher (not by Logos), which would obviously have meant the whole collection would be delayed. So Logos split your single order into two parts. The first part was called Paul and the Faithfulness of God (2 vols) (which contains Paul and the Faithfulness of God and Pauline Perspectives), and the second is called Paul and His Recent Interpreters. The total amount you pay will be exactly the same (actually you'll save 5 cents).

It's important you understand that you are wrong when you say "The change to my preorder was to another book that I did not order.". That's not what happened. All that happened was that your original order was split into two, so that you would receive at least part of it in a timely manner.

I agree that you (we!) should have received an explanation of this change via email. I know that was Logos' intention, but I don't know why it didn't happen. In the past, when it's been necessary to change pre-publication orders, I have received emails. In fact, I got two this week. I also don't know why the Chat people didn't know about the change. They should have done.

The community isn't ignoring your original post. I think everyone here sympathises with you for the lack of communication from Logos, but we also wanted to make sure that you haven't misunderstood the changes that were being made. It is the publishers who moved the goalposts (not Logos), and Logos have tried to act on our behalf by splitting our orders into two. Yes they should have communicated that better, but the actual splitting of the order was for our benefit, and was the right thing to do.

We’ve also retained your pre-order for the still-unreleased third volume, Paul and His Recent Interpreters, at $20.95.
