Logos search feature

I'm new to Logos and I recently purchased the silver package. I've got a question regarding the use of the search feature, can someone help me out?

I would like to do an exhaustive study of all the speeches of Jesus in the 4 gospels where He quotes from the Torah (ie Genesis to Deuteronomy). Is there any way to do this search in Logos?

There is not a straight-forward way to do this, but Logos users are creative folks so there are probably other ways to get at this than what I'll tell you.

First, you have available a resource called Old Testament Quotes in the New Testament. You can page through this to find what you are looking for.

Second you can do a search in the Holman Christian Standard which is tagged for Old Testament Quotes. I've illustrated the search below:

This gives you (hopefully) all the quotes in the gospels, but does not identify their source. You'd have to figure that out on your own.

This request is more complicated than the method above as:

the search term for words starting with vowels falls short -> 128 passages vs. 118
we then have to filter the OT Quotations for those spoken by Jesus i.e. Words of Christ -> 83 passages

1. Search for OT Quotations in HCSB --> you have to use the wildcard *:-

2. Create a Passage List from the results -> OT Quotes in Gospels - HCSB

3. Search for Words of Christ in the passage list (again with the wildcard):-

EDIT: 1. if you use the NA27 as your source of OT Quotations you find 106 of those passages in Words of Christ in HCSB. I would say the extra 23 passages are Allusions rather than Quotations.

2. You still have to determine which passages come from the Torah vs all the OT.

3. My notebook has an SSD, so your wildcard searches may take considerably longer.

Joshua, you're cracking me up! I'm the blue meany on the forum that always whines that Logos is not as easy to use as it could be.

So when I saw your query, I first tried to solve it. I've had Logos since well before the housing meltdown, but after several minutes of trial and error I gave up. I cringed at how many videos I'd have to watch. I thought to myself, girl, you're so inept. I'm sure others will whip out the answer in no time.

Then I came back and saw our two near-geniuses (true) and their approach. Then I saw your next question.

That's when I cracked up. I'm reminded of the well-known song 'Send in the geniuses.'

Now, for those who wish to whack me one more time, my own Bible software (amateur-hour) has an attributes for each of the participants in the Trinity, along with OT quotes. A simple query generates the answer.

I'm intruding a bit on Joshua's query but also learning about Logos. I went to the wiki and of course it presumes one has a verse based query (specifically 'Bible'). And can remember all the steps.

Also I wonder what happens if you don't have a Bible query. I tried out Logos' major competitor (Libronix, the best software ever written, of course). I did a control-A followed by a control-c. It even remembers your query text along with the results. But no embedded refs.
