Ways to search dictionary content

Curious to know all the options I have for searching the content of a dictionary? Thinking about Anchor Bible Dictionary in particular. Can you search, e.g., by Scripture/reference specifically, by word, by Greek content, etc., or is it just the catch-all control-F (or command-F for Mac)?

There is this option (attached), but that's just got up and down arrows for advancing by entry, highlight, etc. I'm asking specifically about search fields.

With ABD open, select the Search tool and search open resources. Format the target Scripture reference like this <John 3:16>. You can find more details and options in the article referenced above.

Thanks, Jack. This gets me close. But there's no way to do this from within the resource itself?

Also, when I do that search, I get snippets in the hit results with hyperlinks to the article, but it's not very easy to get right to the point in that article where John 3:16 occurs. Is there a way to do this?

Hi Abram,

An easy way to accomplish what I believe is what you are asking for is to open the resource you want to search from. Next right click on the bible verse you want to search for. Click Selection. Next click on Search this resource. This will generate the report you seek. Each hyperlink takes you to the exact place in the resource where the searched for data is recorded. Screenshot below.

Thanks, Beloved! I missed that the hit results themselves were hyperlinked. This answers one of my questions--thank you.

In another Bible software there are various search fields you can select from within a given resource (without having to open the second window)--finding something similar is what I'm after, but it sounds like the above might be the closest thing.

A couple of further suggestions:

When you search a resource for a scripture, enclose the reference in angle-brackets rather than quotes, e.g.:
<John 3:16>
This will match where an article handles the reference by another name (e.g. Jn 3:16), and will also match included verses (e.g. if the article matches John 3:14-17).

Consider creating a collection of the Bible Dictionaries you like, so you can search the collection rather that just one resource.
