Text Compare == Reader

If I'm in Text Compare and select "Reader" from the nav drawer it does nothing. I understand that the Text Compare is likely the Reader from an implementation perspective, but from a user perspective I would expect it to take me back to the last non-Text Compare view.

It would be a special case because Read consistently takes you back to the reading panels in the same state that you left them e.g. if I go from BWS to Home (or Library, etc), I expect Read to return to the BWS.

I suspect your motivation is to avoid using the Back key multiple times?

It was just an observation when browsing the new UI. It appears inconsistent. If I select "Home" from the nav drawer, then look again at the nav drawer, "Home" is highlighted as the selected function. Same most other options (Home, Library, Search, Read, Documents, Favorites, History, Help). A few options go to panels where the nav drawer isn't accessible (Presentations, Settings, Store), which I can understand. But the oddity is those few (PG, BWS, TC) that, when selected, show a different function (Read) as being selected.

It's not a major usability problem, it's just a little inconsistent.

I can see how it could feel inconsistent. We are continually working on ways to make the app easier to use while maintaining a degree of uniformity across multiple platforms. Do you think this could be corrected with better visual cues about what type of action the options in the nav drawer will result in?

Essentially choosing items in the nav drawer can do one of three types of things. Hence where user confusion may occur. Tapping on a nav drawer item could:

Open a new activity (must press back or "up" go return to nav drawer/main content view)
Open a new pane in the main content pane
Open/navigate an existing content pane to specific content

Passage Guide (opens the default or last used passage guide in the active read panel)

Absolutely. IIUC, I do believe something even as simple as grouping, for example, Read, PG, BWS, & TC together under one heading in the nav drawer would be enough visual cue for users to logically reason out the behavior of those related actions.

A regrouping like that would suffice, with heading Reading Pane, as the headings of Bible (??), Guides, Tools are organisational rather than navigational. Keep the other items under one or two additional headings i.e. don't delineate them by pane.

The description "opens the default or last used passage guide in the active read panel" leads me to ask why the Guide in the non-active panel isn't opened?

That sounds a lot better. I have a slight preference for using verbs for 1st level and nouns for 2nd level headings (and a strong preference for consistency), but that is slightly broke in my suggestion anyway without renaming some already named functions. Your suggestions sounds much better than anything I can think of.

I assume it would apply to all apps. I didn't realize it was as separate option until Gabe mentioned it above:

The "Courses" item will appear in only the Bible app and only for users taking Mobile Ed courses.

Now, I'm not the one who designed the current menu structure, but it seems to me like consistency with the desktop software might be a concern of the current design, so that might be something to keep in mind here.

Until you said that I didn't realize that, didn't really think about it. It took me a bit after you mentioned it for me to see that, but I'm thick sometimes anyway. [:)] I see now that the selections under Tools are in the Tools menu of the desktop app, Guides matches the Guides menu in the desktop, and the rest are top level functions & the Document menu. I don't know why I didn't see that before.

But, what if you look at the Logos app without the context of the desktop app? If you look at the grouping of functions without that context, there is little cohesion between them. How is Text Compare related to Settings? How is History related to Presentations? There is more cohesion between BWS & TC than TC & History. There is more cohesion between Library & Favorites than between Favorites & Help (in fact, Library, Favorites, History, & Search seem extremely tightly coupled to me). Etc.

However, I wasn't trying to change the whole menu. I was primarily interested in the idea of putting Read, PG, BWS, & TC under a single heading give a visual cue as to their behavior when selected as mentioned earlier. It's Gabe's fault! He got me started. [:P]
