I have some con. ed. money to spend by end of 2013...
I know that I will upgrade multiple Win XP computers in the next year (home, work, laptop)
I realize Logos 5 will not download/run on Win XP
Yet, since I have the money now, I'd like to upgrade to Logos 5.
If I do, will some equivalent of Logos 4 continue to run on my XP machines until I get a new computer?
Related question: If you've upgraded to Logos 5 and have one Win8 and one WinXp computer, will I basically end up with Logos 5 on the Win8 and Logos 4 on the WinXp computer or will I lose functionality altogether until I upgrade the Windows operating system?

Any help, and especially experience of a similar set up (one L5/Win8 computer and one L4/WinXP computer working on the same account) appreciated!

You will be able to run Logos 4 (not an equivalent but exactly Logos 4) until you get your new computer. (There may, eventually, be support issues from Microsoft or Logos but the base software should run). If you purchase any new resources as part of your upgrade they - unless they are only compatible with Logos 5 - should be available on your XP system.

You will end up with Logos 5 on one computer and Logos 4 on the other and information should sync between them.

I don't know if I fully understood your question... but that won't prevent me from taking a stab at it. [:P]

There is a difference between "Logos 5" the software application and "Logos 5" base packages. There is obviously a relationship between the two: L5 base packages provide some of the resources and data sets required to make certain features of L5 work properly. There is, however, a distinction between the two. Most of the resources in an L5 base package are simply books, which will work using the older L4 software. I <think> you are asking: "Can I buy an L5 base package now, utilize most (but not all) of the resources in my L4 XP system, and then move to the L5 software when I am able to update my computer?" Does that sum up what you are wanting to know? If so, the answer is "Yes." [:)]

Adding to Graham's answer, make sure you keep Logos 4 up-to-date because Logos will provide compatibility fixes for the foreseeable future to ensure it will run all your Logos 5 resources and will sync with Logos 5 (it won't receive new features). Note that it may not compile all your Personal Books but will/should run the resource you compiled in Logos 5 (transfer it to the XP computer and use the scan command).

Thanks for taking time to respond! No, I am talking only about the application engine(s). When I bought L5 right when it came out, I didn't realize XP was not supported, so I got an error message when it started to download. (Logos was kind enough to issue a refund and cancel the download.) My question is if purchasing and having L5 in my download queue (both before I buy a Win8 machine and after, since I have multiple computers) will somehow cause the XP computers with L4 to not work or no longer download other resources because the download manager realizes it can't use L5 on the XP machine.

Sorry, my question seems so convoluted... I'm just likely to continue with a home XP computer for at least 2 more years, and I use L4 on it quite a bit at home. My church computer is due to be replaced sometime in 2014, so will be able to use L5. And I'd like to use 2013 funds to go ahead and purchase the L5 engine (probably a minimal upgrade or the dataset upgrade... don't need any more of a base package than that.)

For clarification: The engine (software) is free. You pay zilch, nada. The resources you must pay for, including datasets required to make certain features work. Those datasets can be acquired via a base package or minimal cross grade.

NOTE: It is generally a "better value" to purchase a base package to acquire the datasets. However, if you don't want any new resources, it will be cheaper to purchase the minimal cross grade by itself.

No. You can run both L4 and L5 without any issue. L4 won't try to download resources its incapable of using. The issue you had previously wasn't "L4 getting log jammed with L5 resources," but rather the L5 installer wouldn't run (which is the expected behavior).
