CRASH on Startup - Mavericks With Logos 5

Hey everyone! I'm just starting out with Logos 5, having never used any previous version before. When trying to open Logos 5, it bounces several times in the dock and then crashes without any further popups. Its definitely not a download problem, because the same installer worked just fine on my dads laptop running Mavericks. I need some help figuring out what the problem is with mine. I also tried running Logos 4 on it, but it crashed in exactly the same way. The only message that shows up in the console is this:

Nov 10 18:42:36 Jakes-MacBook-Pro.local Logos Bible Software 4[960]: Using your own bundle identifier as an NSUserDefaults suite name does not make sense and will not work. Break on _NSUserDefaults_Log_Nonsensical_Suites to find this

It's the same error for both Logos 4 & 5. Any ideas?

I'm afraid that the fact that the installer worked fine on one system doesn't really have any relevance to yours. The resources need to be downloaded to each system and they are separate installations. Incidentally, are you using the same account details when using Logos on both systems?

Thanks for the quick reply. This problem occurs before I even get the chance to login, so I don't think it has to do with downloading resources. No popups show up or anything once I open the app. It just bounces in the dock then closes without doing anything. I've tried deleting the .plist file in ~Library/Preferences, but it still doesn't ask me for login details. It did pop up with the agreement window the first time I ran it however. Since then I haven't had anything though.

I am using the same login details for all the computers I've installed it on. Is there any problem with installing on multiple computers? I initially tried installing it on my laptop, but when that failed I installed on dads as a test. I also have it setup on my Windows desktop computer, running just fine.

I have done the logging, but after looking at the file generated the only error in there was the one I listed above. I can do it again anyway if you like?

Sorry, I wasn't particularly saying the issue was due to downloading resources, just that each installation needs to be treated separately.

No problem on installing on multiple computers for your own use. From a licencing perspective you can install the software on as many machines as you like for your own personal use.

I'm afraid this is probably as far as I can go. It looks like there is something Mac-specific going on here (I use Windows) and I'll need to leave it to those who know the Mac environment better to comment further.

Yep, that's the only log file. That's the zip file generated when clicking archive logs. I guess Logos doesn't even get to the point where it starts logging? I don't really know, but I do know that it isn't generating any application specific logs in any of the default logging folders.

Might be worth mentioning that I just tried the RC and that didn't make a difference. I get the feeling the problem lies somewhere else in my system? Any app incompatibilities I should be aware of?

I have seen reports of some people have problems running on Mavericks - but also reports saying it is fine.

Yeah, thats the thing. It works just fine on my dads laptop running Mavericks. I've tried closing all background apps, but that doesn't seem to make a difference. Could the fact that my system has 300mb of free space (after fiddling and downloading different versions ) make a difference? I intend to free up just enough for my library (~800mb), but it shouldn't make a difference to just opening the application should it?

The reason I have so little space is that I'm currently booting off a 16gb USB indefinitely (until I get a new HDD for my 2009 macbook).

EDIT: Just cleared all the caches and now have 1.5gb free, and its still crashing, so no luck. It asked me to agree to the conditions again, but same result afterwards.

I can't comment on the appropriateness of using a USB drive - but I think that could be an issue.

However the lack of space will be a problem.

As part of setting up a new Logos installation all your resources need to be indexed. This process takes a lot of space - depending on the size of your library some people estimate you need 20GB so I think the amount of free space you have available will be a real problem.

The system requirements (https://www.logos.com/support/tech-faq) for Mac state:

20GB Free Space - Internal HDD/SSD Only
(May require additional space depending on your library)

Ouch. That could be a problem then. How big is that index space relative to the size of your library? I mean, if my library is ~800mb, would my index add another 300mb to the size required? Surely that 20gb is being generous and assuming an absolutely huge library size?!

5.2 RC-2 on an iMac OS 10.9. My index folders are 43% of the Resource folder—9GB Index & 21GB Resources. In your case, that would work out to 344MB.

L5 is a marvelous application, but it is a resource hog [8-|]

Yeah, I figured something like that. That's bearable.

I get a strong impression size & USB booting isn't the cause of my problem though. And USB booting shouldn't be a problem as far as I know. Maybe for windows, but Mac booting has never caused me any problems with any other apps....Unless there's a special reason you can't use USB's with Logos?

I believe Logos uses temporary files during the indexing process which will - temporarily - add to the space requirements.

I'll just move a lot of stuff off the drive, index it all, and then fill the space back in. Indexing is only done on request and during the first load of new resources isn't it? It probably is a problem in the big scheme, but I get the feeling its not related to this crash now. If it is a space problem, it might be a good idea to make proper error messages so that people can tell what the problem is.

Indexes are updated everytime you add a new resource to your library.

The "first time" indexing is the biggest but indexing is an ongoing factor in the use of Logos software

I can't be certain that the lack of space is the issue but I do feel it is a "probable cause"

Well, I gave the figures on a fully-indexed installation. You are correct that Logos would use much more space during the indexing process.

In addition to Bruce's comments above, 5.2 will also initiate a reindex when/if it detects corruption in one of the index files.

Ok, just to check what you said I resized the partition to 32gb, so I now have 17.5gb of free space on it. Logos still fails to load for exactly the same reason as before however. I'm quite sure that it doesn't have anything to do with the size. If 17gb isn't big enough, that really is ridiculous! Hopefully someone can help me out with this soon.
