List all lemma in a particular book

Hello all,

I hope this question isn't redundant, but I can't find it. So here goes:

I am a Logos 4 user. How can I produce a list of all the lemma used in a particular book of the Bible (e.g., Ezekiel) using a particular resource (e.g., BHS/WHM)? (Aside from the brute force approach of manually going word-for-word, obviously. I don't need Logos for that...)

I'm going to throw in the "bigger goal" just in case someone has tackled my project before:

Ultimately, I want to pull out all of the lemma used in a particular book that occur "more frequently" in that book than others. (I usually prefer to use a density criterion, such as "# hits/# verses" to determine how "frequently" a word occurs. It's not fool proof, but it works well most of the time.)

It would be handy to set a "separation" criterion (e.g., occurs X% more often than in any other book) and a "clustering" criterion (e.g., can occur in a group of Y books where the frequency of the lemma are all separated from any other book by at least the separation criterion).

Obviously, it would be nice to separate out the hapax legomenon, too.

You can generate a Word List from the File menu. Press Add, change the resource and type in your reference e.g. Ezek 1-48. It will take a while to generate the whole 48 chapters of the book.

Ultimately, I want to pull out all of the lemma used in a particular book that occur "more frequently" in that book than others. The Count will tell you how often the lemma occurs. But you can Search for a lemma in All Passages, Graph results and select your criterion like # hits / # verses to compare hits in Ezek with other books.

Obviously, it would be nice to separate out the hapax legomenon, too.

Use a custom Exegetical Guide and adjust the number of lemmas in the Word by Word section to be 1. There is a limit on the number of verses to be shown (15), so it would not be possible to enter more than a chapter.

Thank you. I had forgotten about the word list functionality. Very helpful.

Unfortunately, I still face the unenviable task of manually running over a thousand searches. It would be nice if Logos had a scripting language. (Does it? Is this a feature I haven't uncovered?)

A good example of what I'm doing can be seen with the word אָדָם. Obviously, this is a very common word in the Hebrew scriptures. But if you search on it and then plot it by "# of Verses with hits in Book / Number of Verses in Book", it becomes very clear that something special may be going on with that word in Ezekiel and Ecclesiastes. (In this case, my particular interest is Ezekiel, where the phrase "Son of Man" deserves attention.)

If, on the other hand, you did a search on some other word (like אשׁר), you can see that the relative pronoun doesn't stand out, even though there are books where the density metric is substantially lower or higher.

Needless to say, this procedure cannot be used robotically and without thought. (For example: A hapax is not necessarily a theologically weighty word just because it occurs "infinitely more frequently" in the book where it occurs than in any other book of the Bible.) The lower the # of occurrences overall, the less significant the result.

In fact, I'd be curious to know how many previously identified "theologically significant words" pop up using a procedure like this, and under what conditions. I'd also be curious to know which ones are missed and why.

In any case: You've made my task easier, and I thank you for that. It's still not easy yet, so I guess we'll find out how persistent I am. (Or whether I'm willing to learn how to program again. It's been a decade...)

Brian, what you are trying to do is what text analytic software is designed to do. Academic websites offer such software for free. What we need to do is convince Bob P. that there are things to be learned by applying such tools to Logos resources. It would be a valuable addition to the Logos toolset
