Problem with heading search in Theological Journal Library

I finally was able to "download" the updated TJL resources from my Logos 3 resource directory to Logos4 using the "scan" command. However the heading search still isn't working for me.

When I type "heading:Paul" I get hits for all occurences of "Paul", regardless of whether it is in the heading or in the article. I only want hits for "Paul" in the heading.

Am I doing something wrong?

I think I've answered my own question. Apparently not all of the journals were updated. The heading search is working for the journals with a December file date. The heading search does not work with the others with an earlier file date.

Can someone else confirm this? Thanks.

P.S. I really want to understand this since I think the heading (topic) search is essential in the journals.

Heading has been made a searchable term in only the latest of the Galaxie journals, and I'm not sure all the journals in that release were so coded. You can find out by opening the latest journal and looking at the information page. Heading will show as a searchable field. I hope they add this to previous releases, but I haven't heard that they will.

While I can not help you, I COMPLETELY agree with this statement.

My understanding is that L4 does NOT search journal headings specifically. It should, but doesn't. Without that ability, it has severly limited the effectiveness of a person's journal collections.

There has been much discussion about this issue and the whole issue of being able to 'topically' search resources. Both involve the tagging of resources. I think Logos leadership knows there is not a lot of happiness about the current situation and have promised some improvements. I'm not sure how the Galaxie journals will fit into the scheme. They are not Logos products so tagging them with heading info would not be their responsibility. It would fall back to Galaxie to take care of this as far as I know. Perhaps an email to Hampton at Galaxie about the feature you like would get a positive response or some information on his plans.

IMPORTANT INFO: Please read!

In the past few months, I've personally gone through over 400 of the volumes from previous Theological Journal CDs... fixing the typos that you reported ... rebuilding in the new Logos xml format... removing my 1/2 inch margins so that they fill the screen on the iphone...

One nice thing about the new format is that titles and headings are now searchable. So, in addition to being able to search for "author:wallace" you can search for "heading:keyword".... that should help you narrow your searches to articles or sections dealing specifically with your topic.

If you are using Logos 4, it should automatically download these updated books to your library.

If you are using Libronix 3, you can download them from ftp://ftp.logos.com/LbxBooks/
look for the gs_journalabbrev.lbxlls files with dates of 12/xx/2009
if you are using IE - you can click the page icon at the top right of the browser and choose "open ftp site in windows explorer", then you can select multiple files and download them. Tip: click the modified column twice and the updated gs_ files will be at the top of the list.

Note: If you don't download the updated files, the newest volumes of the journals on TJL 12 will be listed at the beginning of that particular journal in the "my library" in libronix/logos engine. That is because of the way the new logos book builder creates the sort title. For example, you would see:
Bibliotheca Sacra Volume 165
Bibliotheca Sacra Volume 91
Bibliotheca Sacra Volume 92
etc.

If you don't have one, get hold of an FTP program (Core FTP Lite is free).
In your FTP program go to ftp.logos.com and open the LbxBooks folder
Sort the files by date.
Scroll down a little until you see files beginning with GS_ - these are Galaxie Software files
Select all these files, unless you know they're not relevant to you (the filenames without numbers are not journals, for example).
Copy them into any folder on your computer, but not your Logos 4 resources folder.
Once downloaded type scan foldername in your L4 command bar.

Once scanned, and indexed, you can search them using heading:searchterm

Thanks for the explanation. From what I understand, there is one exception...

If you have ordered the recent TJL volumes (that are in Logos 3 format), you will need to install them in Logos 3 and sync your license with the Logos servers. Then follow the steps you outlined. Otherwise Logos 4 will not recognize the new volumes as part of your license.

For example, I uninstalled Logos 3 since I'm very happy with Logos 4. Yesterday I ordered the new TJL volumes on CD. When they arrive I will need to reinstall Logos 3 (actually already did) and install them in Logos 3, sync my license, and do a scan command in Logos 4.

If you have ordered disk 12, you may not need to download at all. It's likely that all these updated resources are included on the new disk. If that's the case (and I don't know because mine hasn't arrived yet!), just install it in L3, sync the licence, then scan the L3 resources folder and you'll hopefully not need to download anything at all.

I have downloaded the newest files from the ftp server but do not find that this is true. Some journals can be searched by heading but not all. I noticed that only BIBSAC 164 is searchable by heading. So it seems this statement is only partially correct.

No, all the new TLJ files can be searched in this way (though not all files are new). How did you download the files?

If you downloaded them straight into your Logos folder, they may not be recognised. Copy them out, and run a Scan command.
If you downloaded them into another folder, then ran scan, you have to exit and re-load Logos before they'll be recognised. Check your indexer log if nothing happens upon restart.

All of my journals (I have vols. 1 - 9) have either a mid-October 2009 or a mid-December 2009 file date in my Logos4 resource directory. Those with a mid-December date are tagged with heading search functionality. Those with a mid-October date are not tagged with heading search.

OK. I'll check back once indexing is complete. What I did was check the information page on various volumes in various journals. For example in BibSac volume 164 states that 'heading' is a searchable field, while volume 99 does not. I believe I have the most recent editions of each of these.

Perhaps it is just curious that with incomplete indexing BibSac 164 reported heading search results and volume 99 did not, corresponding to their information page expectations.

It appears I am wrong. Again, as I said earlier, it would be welcome news if all these journals can now be searched by heading (even if the information pages do not say so).

Have to assume that the data that explains what is searchable was somehow not updated. I still have 25 hours left on indexing according to my indexer. Not bad. Four hours ago I had 71.

OK. After the overnight indexing it looks like all the BibSac volumes are in fact searchable by heading on my computer. Very nice. Thanks to those who posted the good news.
